I know what are you thinking. you're about to press the 'NO' button rigth? well, at least read this and you'll decide later.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of the self proclamed Fine Art. in fact, I'm not really fond of anything that could call itself art(wich is a big contraption for someone fond of pixelArt :P). lets just say that I'm not the kind of people who can actually admire the beatifulness and  huge background in the portrait of an old lady from the 16th century.

but

but I managed to think  something for this challenge, as I wanted to give it my personal touch(you're warned: every challenge i join will be an example of creativity ;D).

i wondered what could I do: from Da Vinci's Tank in the Metal Slug style, to Rapa Nui(Eastern Island)'s Moais in their infamous Gradious incarnation, to some sort of round-about postmodern futurism(?) propaganda figther sprite, to a Murasame Sword SHMUP ship. so many ideas, yet so short on time :(.. but then the spark came to my mind: Cave Paintings! yes, while everyone is focused on reworking traditional paintings, why not go far beyond to the origins of what is know as Art?

here's my entry: one of the cave paintings that can be found in the Spanish province of Valltorta Albocàsser

needless to say, everything on this piece was carefully planned, despite its rought and scribbled appearance(that was the idea :P). only two colors used for an extra 'retro' feel.(even when its in a transparent background)

Wonderfully animated. Also I really dig the subject.

I tried to kept it as simple as posible. beliveme when i say, that i tried to put it in a mockup, but it looked terrible -or i could manage to make a decent stone/cavern texture that could work with the sprite itself.-

Excellent idea, although i personally don't think it works as a 2 colour trans sprite, would have liked to see it more paint-like on a cave/stone background perhaps. Although that would have been pretty tough for a week's work so i'll let you off. :D

Beautiful.  Reminds me of an old cartoon I can't quite place.  Now everybody take their favorite sprite and convert it to that stance and walk cycle

Really really really like this one metaru! I thought about doing something like this for the challenge, but i didn't feel like pixeling this week. i'm glad someone had the same idea.

really good job

Good luck!!!

I'm amazed about how people actually took their time to read the description, rather than focusing on the piece itself. its not that is something bad(in fact, its exelent).

but the description, for this piece, its not and extension of the work itself. just a personal though/opinion. I am, indeed, an ignorant. yet an ignorant who doesn't really care to not to be. in any case, (and I stated in the essay :P) being not really fond of art while being a fan of pixelArt is a contraption, and automatically reveals that my posted coments is nothing but a reasonless comment.

I like it. It's a good idea, too.

Dear Metaru, I'm not about to give you the been-there-done-that speech, but...
I used to, like you, not to be specially into ancient or modern art, and considered all around the art world to be a big hypocrisy. And I can assure you, that, specially after having finnished the fine arts degree, i recon there is a lot of bullshit in the this field of practise. Nevertheless, I defend that the real art is personal, to the extent of ONE definition per individual.
You talk about the self-proclaimed fine-art, but i remind you that art can't proclaim itself... there's always someone who does it in her place.

Art is like your last summer vacations, you can make them into anything you wished it would be!

You're not going beyond the origins of art :P What a pretentious thing to say. I like the idea though, but a game sprite is worthless without a game area to function in.

PixelSpy (Level 5 Captain) at 2/29/2008 6:10:00 AM
I think it's very nice. Good idea

balls01 (Level 2 Quiet One) at 2/29/2008 2:27:53 AM
i like it its like natufian good work its like the dodginess of cave painting then with the smoothness of a modern day animation

Cave Paintings! yes, while everyone is focused on reworking traditional paintings, why not go far beyond to the origins of what is know as Art?

i found that funny considering cave paintings are about as old of art as it gets. i like it though, its pretty neat ^^

Adarias (Level 7 Colonel) at 2/28/2008 7:39:21 PM
"admiration" is very different from "liking," so I hope for your artistic and more general sake that you meant the latter.

mozzy (Level 1 Jukyu) at 2/28/2008 6:31:53 PM
Very clever.

I like this a lot.

DJD (Level 4 Button Man) at 2/28/2008 6:22:48 PM
a game in this style on cave walls...Hrm, metaru, you are onto something grand...

Great work, though I think you shouldn't throw out all art just because of some neoclassicism. :F
