Original characters belong to Boywithmeese .

From my vanity project following the whole NeoGeo fighter portrait motif. This brother and sister team is the only pair in the bunch.

Enjoy.

UPDATE 2/9/08: Thanks first off to the constructive criticism. I hopefully updated them to a bit more of an appealing piece. Though I'm sure I have a ways to go yet before it looks right.

After all my efforts I could only knock off 2 colors ::hangs head:: so the count goes from 48 to 46 with transparent color included. I really did try to knock it down to at least in the high 30s as suggested by Hatch. But I'm not sure this NeoGeo style that I am going for can't get below 5 or 4 shades per color. (Click for the reference I used of the NeoGeo shading style) I will try hard to knock off any unnecessary colors I have, though.

As for further suggestions, I pulled back on the blurry unnecessary colors on their faces to hopefully make the shading appear sharper. I also got rid of what outlines I could get rid of as well. And, I tried to give Mikey a darker shadow to distinguish him from Endeva in front of him as per Leel's suggestion.

I welcome further CC as I'm sure this piece isn't quite near done. Please keep any criticisms constructive, okie? De-constructive gems like "Crap-tastic" doesn't help me to improve.

Thanks a lot, everybody!

Reo - Im a google whore lol, If I see a reference, I google it. saves me mental effort of trying to remember things.

Hatch  - I have to say I appreciate your responce. My apologies for being brash, your initial comments practically hurt my feelings lol. with that said. I hope all is well.

@ Jaeden: I wasn't trying to pick a fight, and I'm sorry I've upset you so. I did read the description and I did wade through the entire DA account to find the reference. I have a passing familiarity with Neo Geo style portraits (though I would never pretend to be an expert). I wouldn't have said anything about the lack of AA--or any of the other problems--if it hadn't also been present in every other piece thus submitted--this eliminates it as a purely stylistic decision. The problems I listed are problems and they are present in all of bunnystick's other submitted pieces.

Having said that, after reading my post I noticed it did sound a little harsh, which is why I added the little disclaimer, you've got me there. It probably just made things worse. I freely admit it was poor judgement on my part, an overall certainly wasn't the best piece of critique I've ever given.

At the risk of upsetting you further, I humbly request that if you reply, please lose the aggressive sarcastic tone. It doesn't help anything.

@Jaeden:well its quite easy to miss in a description like that,it only gives a link to the persons DA acount, and not everybody click links just to see the orignal(and she never said she was aiming for the orignals style).

On the piece, its a good piece, messy but good!

I agree with leel  on the faces seeming washed out, or a bit blurry. I know what style you were intending to mimic  but perhaphs a darker tone accenting features may have helped the contrast in the faces against the hair. Perhaphs minimizing the ammount of colors AA'ing the face would have helped as well.

Hatch  ... your rather bad at constructive critisism... Infact your comment was down right mean. The fact that you pointed out "I hope i dont sound too mean." sounds to me like a pathetic disclaimer for something you already knew you were doing.

Yes, it could be brought down to 32 colors rather easily, I agree, but that could have been said as simply as that.

I think as well that you missed the point of this piece. If you looked at a reference from 'Neogeo'  you would see why there is a lacking of antialiasing.. but I guess you failed to read the description befor going on your rant ^_^

Take some pointers from  leel on how to provide an excelent piece of critisism. Im not trying to be mean, but you should work on your communication skills :-)

I agree with hatch,  you're very creative and your pieces have lots of energy and style and .. i'm kind of short on words atm, but there's lots of goodness in them, but they are rather messy when you take time to look closely.   You have a lot of colors, but only two tones for shading, and all the buffer colors (on the sleeve especially) just take away from the sharp clean style this is in.  It's a good idea to aa, when you just have a clear line between shadow and midtone, unfortunately what you have on the sleeve is borderline pillowshading.   It's just... too.. blurry.

I really like the faces, but they're a little blurry as well.  I know people preach about low color counts very often on this site, but I genuinely think that getting rid of some colors will only improve your piece, it's not just an ideal that we all blindly follow hehe.

And one last thing - I almost wish the guy's clothes were a tone darker than  than hers, it'd still be matching and monotone, but it'd read easier, because he's behind her in some places it's hard to differentiate where the girl ends and the guy begins.

But overall it's awesome looking.  I love the expressions, and my favorite bit is the girl's chin - it just looks like all the colors are in the right place - they show the form perfectly rather than just being buffers.

Is there any reason the piece is cropped as it is?  Is it supposed to fit somewhere? because it doesn't seem like it'd take up too much space if you finished off the fingers and the elbow/shoulder..

P.S. sorry about the length!

Nice piece, though I'd like to see it without the clipped fingers.

Excellent style ... though I'd like to see it not cut-off on the edges!  Great job!

Hatch (Level 3 Private Eye) at 4/5/2008 1:25:27 PM
Yup, this could easily be brought down to 16 colors. (and it would be CRIMINALLY easy to bring it down to 32). Anyhow, this and your other pieces prove you're a competent artist, but on the pixel level they're a real mess. No AA, wasted colors, harsh banding, etc. If you pay no mind to pixel-level technique, what's the point of making pixel art? Just my two bits. Hope I don't sound too mean.

Wow thats really nice! a lot of useless colours on the faces tho :(
