Haven't had much to upload here in a while mainly because I been using all my pixelling time on my game projects such as my retro game ya see here known as Hero - Celestial Force.  Already posted a pic of this game a while ago but that image is now very much out of date so here's some brand new shots from the first level.  These are real shots, not mock ups, so the game is playable but I still got a long way to go before even level 1 is complete.  Enjoying the heck out of making it though :)

And yeah it's still mostly inspired by the NES and uses a custom palette from one of the NES emulators (and has an original NSF soundtrack), but not the actual NES graphic limitations, so I guess the graphic style is somewhere between NES and SNES now.  Maybe call it NES Plus. :P

There are some enemy types that are based on the shapes of some of his.  Reavers in particular (which I thought were in these shots but these are much older than I thought, they don't even have the gray rocks and the enemy shown here has been revised considerably since)

MyO (Level 1 Rookie) @ 1/13/2011 11:22

Oh, pardon me then. Heh, and I was trying to find Drones there.

They look as good as your avatar nevertheless.

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 1/12/2011 05:06

It's not Flip Hero in this.  I didn't want to mess with Daniel Remar's characters and he and I agreed this is fine set far in the future of his game with some ties to his story.

And bloody hell these shots are from nearly 3 years ago? eep...

MyO (Level 1 Rookie) @ 1/12/2011 04:53

Frankly, I thought Flip Hero is built of some not very colorful metal. Cool nevertheless: it is staggering to find out how people see the monochrome world of his. =)

Victor Rojo (Level 10 King Ghidorah) @ 8/19/2010 07:50

Thanks, but I've never done something so small, I want to do something like this, and I thought to start this is a good guide :)

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 8/16/2010 07:29

learn from what? You're way better than me.  Hm these screens are old. They don't even have the gray rocks in the tiles and all the sprites have been revised to various degrees since.

Victor Rojo (Level 10 King Ghidorah) @ 8/16/2010 05:02

What I can say? I have to learn from this. Perfect work

Artic (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 2/13/2010 10:38

Man these look pretty sweet. If this is out of date then I can't wait to see the most current media on the project.

Oh BTW about that graphic thing, when I first saw this (first time was actually quite awhile ago) it actually reminded me of Sega GENESIS graphics.

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 2/7/2010 04:23

Man, these screens are getting old now.  I've redone from scratch or edited the majority of the sprites and tiles since I did these.  Title menu too is totally different.

Jabber (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 2/6/2010 23:32

Beautiful. I love Hero, and this looks like a more-than-worthy tribute.

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 11/29/2009 07:02

Shouldn't be too long for a demo.  These are pretty old screenshots now.

DreamRunner (Level 1 Gangster) @ 11/29/2009 04:53

Cool! I have a hope to play this game in the future :)

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 11/23/2009 07:29

Still working on it.  Just released some updated screenshots from level 1 and the title screen on my blog and DevinartArt account.

vampireslug (Level 5 Detective) @ 11/19/2009 07:18

Update?  Where can we get our greedy hands on a demo?  Very Metroid-ish without being a rip-off.  Nice job.

jamesmorrow07 (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 8/4/2009 21:22

This is too cool.

By the way, I saw that Carnivac icon of yours on dA and I thought, this guy must be familiar, now where have I seen that avatar before? So now I know.

Awesome stuff. I wanna learn the actual NES language so I can develop my own ROM someday.

pixelator11 (Level 1 Depressed) @ 5/20/2009 14:46

wat websites or software do u use to make games, if u no any?

chess (Level 8 Shodan) @ 9/6/2008 05:51

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 8/26/2008 14:57
Maybe.  The core engine is done and level 1 is being built.

shmupstick (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 8/26/2008 11:07
A demo anytime soon?

Souly (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 5/6/2008 10:48
Very well done, the rocks are quite nice.
The pipe line work is an awesome idea, I never though of that.
Logo is done quite nicely as well.

Fav'd and 6/6. :]

happy bacchus (Level 1 Thug) @ 5/5/2008 16:26

pain (Level 9 Nidan) @ 5/5/2008 06:53

Very cool, neat style.

Scruffs (Level 7 Assassin) @ 5/4/2008 12:23
god everything is so tight, very nice tiles and great colours, great job.

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 5/4/2008 02:15
My two favorite computers those are :)  I would like to do a small CPC version sometime.  A small lil sidequest sorta thing.  And this game is influenced by a couple of CPC and Amiga titles (small elements of games such as Switchblade and Turrican II) as well as the obvious console influence.

jamon (Level 10 Operative) @ 5/4/2008 01:45
more i look at it i more like it - reminds me on days with CPC and Amiga!

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 5/3/2008 08:04
You have to be able to see the rocks clearly so you know exactly where you can move.  Only purely background stuff needs to be fairly low contrast.  Try viewing any of the screenshots at it's proper resolution and you'll see it's easy to see the sprites anyways, and will even more so when the game is running as they animate and move about.

The violet rocks are actually my least favorite color scheme, it's only done like that for a slightly darker atmosphere when progressing further down the caverns.

zi-double (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 5/3/2008 07:36
very nice work ...

what I think when see in first time: the colours of rocks look very well, but with that light colours /I talk for yellow/ have  big contrast and sprites are like part of background ... maybe if rocks are with a bit low contrast colours than will be better, because than player will be watch sprites and elements for play easy.

This problem is only when have yellow rocks, because in little sprites have yellow colours - in violet area they look best ...

iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 5/2/2008 09:47
Reeeeal tight pixels there!

8/8 + FAV

Fred (Level 3 Enforcer) @ 5/2/2008 05:02
It looks very oldschoolish. Just love that style.

DJD (Level 4 Button Man) @ 5/1/2008 20:18
Man I've never been so excited about a gm wip, probably since harry rpg. This has enormous potential and it is only heightened by your awesome edgy graphics. You've got a knack for this nes/snes style. God damn, I just can't stop staring at it.

vedsten (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 5/1/2008 05:41
Great, great stuff

Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 5/1/2008 02:36
I just noticed that it says "Press start" in the corner of the screen which means:

Great stuff!!! So when do you reckon we'll get to play the first level?

6dof (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 4/30/2008 15:50
Very cool stuff here.

Saboteur (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 4/30/2008 14:16

Looks so badass! Wonderful work.

shmupstick (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 4/30/2008 11:39
So when can we have a demo then? This summer?

Elk (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 4/30/2008 11:18
some minor mistakes but really good :)!

Taikon (Level 3 Stalker) @ 4/30/2008 09:34
This reminds me so much of Metroid! Good times.. can't wait for your game to be done!

Darth Mandarb (Level 10 Operative) @ 4/30/2008 09:20

I want to play it now !

very interesting work on palettes and details, good job Wolverine ;)

Badassbill (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 4/30/2008 07:28
That's the sexiest looking NES game I've ever seen. Great job.

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 4/30/2008 07:24
Those are just overlays just to remind ya that yer underwater in some of the mazes as they get quite dark since I'm not really using backgrounds when underwater.  Looks better when yer actually in those water areas and the player sprite is switched for a blue-ish variant (or green depending on the water color used in that section).

Naufr4g0 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/30/2008 07:24
I'm waiting for this game for 2 years!
I like very much your retro-styled graphics and I hope you can complete soon  this game and the other "in progress" projects.
I'm studying programming languages (as Java and C++) only to write retro-styled games. :)
I love them very much. Maybe 'cause I'm a nostalgic 30 years old guy?

sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) @ 4/30/2008 07:17
I like that Pink :) The blue rocks next to the water tiles seem a bit strange to me but I guess you know what u r doing.
