Yay, my first challenge entry. Took me a while, and I was beginning to worry that it wouldn't be done in time.

Thanks to ptoing for crits.

Progress animation.

Edit: Made some changes to the background to make it look a little less sketchy and the fallen tomato so that it'll match the rest a bit better.

Less dithered version for the non-dither crowd?

silent sniper (Level 1 Depressed) at 7/26/2008 1:17:23 PM
amazing, completely stunning bg work

stonewall (Level 1 Thug) at 7/16/2008 10:12:30 AM
Very nice
Good job on the bg. The soil still left in the pot came out nicely as well.

Nayelianne (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/25/2008 11:28:28 AM
I'm stunned by this. Absolutely amazing work. I love how detailed and focused it is at the same time. You really managed to express the feeling of depression in the image, even if you hadn't written "depression" on it.
It's all very subtle yet striking :)

I'm also amazed by the small amount of colors you used, it actually looks like you used way more. I wish I knew how to do that xD

Arachne (Level 4 Murderer) at 6/23/2008 2:24:20 PM
Alright, I finally got around to cleaning it up a bit. It wasn't until I'd taken a break from it for a while that I saw how sketchy some parts were, like the dark leafy blob behind the string. I initially tried to keep the detail level in the background to a minimum, so I hope it's not too busy now. On the other hand, I suppose smaller leaves in the background might add a stronger sense of depth?

Zweckform (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 6/14/2008 1:40:25 AM
Worthy winner no doubt. Good idea and execution of it. Maybe some dithering on the "main" tomato wouldn't hurt.

Great atmosphere all in all. Congrats.

Chaos Design (Level 3 Stalker) at 6/10/2008 2:20:41 PM
What a master piece. Amazing.

MichaS (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/8/2008 12:19:21 AM
greatly :)

skeddles (Level 11 Psychopath) at 6/6/2008 8:01:47 PM
Looks even better now!

RoboBOT (Level 6 Commander) at 6/6/2008 2:48:03 PM
I agree, it looks better with the ground dithered. It gives it a nice rough texture.

Arachne (Level 4 Murderer) at 6/6/2008 11:41:40 AM

Wow, thanks for all the kind words, guys!

I tried removing the dithering, but I just thought that made the ground look shiny and more like water. http://www.retinaleclipse.com/tomato8c.gif

Edit: Maybe it's because other things are dithered while the ground is not?

iLKke and pain, thanks, I'll see if I can do something about the sketchier parts of the background and the shading on the fallen tomato.

Webus (Level 3 Private Eye) at 6/5/2008 5:39:43 PM

MashPotato (Level 6 Made) at 6/3/2008 11:54:19 AM
Wow, clever idea and awesome execution (pun intended, but only after the fact)

B_j0k3r0 (Level 1 Private) at 6/3/2008 4:52:17 AM
Love it!

vedsten (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 6/3/2008 4:29:58 AM
Composition, colors, idea and execution.. this is all kinds of cool

Mirre (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 6/3/2008 3:20:06 AM
Love this! Great concept and well executed! I really like that you dithered the ground - it gives a nice texture to it! There's such depth to it too. Those leaves in the background must have taken quite a while to pixel.

Bloo (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 6/2/2008 4:44:17 PM
This is just awesome!!! It's like a painting instead of PA, you got my vote!!!

fav'd

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 6/2/2008 12:44:06 PM
Concept and excecution, both magnificent. :)

Majoris (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/2/2008 12:35:32 PM
Saw this while I was voting (you got my vote, no contest). This is excellent.

jamon (Level 8 Marshal) at 6/2/2008 7:36:39 AM
I like depth of this image. Colors are great.
Dithered ground ... erm... there was no need for it.

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 6/2/2008 6:23:15 AM
Rock solid. Lovely AA and hue shift on the ground. Also, limp leaves ftw.
BG looks a bit deadlined? Perhaps would have a better composition with another dark bit in top left.
Also, good choice not to dither tomatoes.

pain (Level 9 Nidan) at 6/2/2008 3:46:21 AM
excellent ... bkg is awesome :D ... but smashed tomato looks a bit flat ...

Packrat (Level 7 General Manager) at 6/1/2008 11:55:18 PM
Very skillfully selected colors, they reflect the mood very well.

FlyGuy (Level 7 Underboss) at 6/1/2008 11:16:32 PM
I hope you don't think I was saying she didn't pull it off. I was just asking the goal of this challenge. I agree with you on the amount of emotion I see in this image.

The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) at 6/1/2008 8:50:58 PM
Actually, Flyguy, she pulled off exactly what I was hoping more people would try and do: that is, instead of purely showing emotion by implanting a facial expression on the green lives, that you could somehow manipulate the plants supposed random form to fit some sort of feeling or emotion. The droopy nature of the leaves and leaking tomatoes is perfect. Great job Spider-lover, ergh, I mean, Arachne...

FlyGuy (Level 7 Underboss) at 6/1/2008 6:00:12 PM
This is just perfect. Was the plant suppose to show emotion though? or is it just suppose to state the emotion in words.  (Looks like the tomato is crying)

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 6/1/2008 4:09:26 PM
Beautiful! The only word in my mind right now....

juandifool (Level 3 Stalker) at 6/1/2008 4:07:22 PM
wau! for me you are the winner!

ctrl-alt-delete (Level 3 Corporate Drone) at 6/1/2008 2:17:05 PM
Nice choice of blue to saturate the background.  It really makes the ripe tomatos pop out of the image.  They look absolutly ripe and delicious!

Emanu (Level 3 Chief) at 6/1/2008 1:15:00 PM
great color choices, great stuff!

skeddles (Level 11 Psychopath) at 6/1/2008 1:02:42 PM
Wow, I love this. Much feeling, great pixeling, all around awesome.

saggiofilosofo (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/1/2008 12:14:40 PM
Really a piece of art! Great job!

Mindsreturn (Level 3 Private Eye) at 6/1/2008 12:03:12 PM
Completely Love it. Nice that you didn't make it anthropomorphic(SP?).

Arachne (Level 4 Murderer) at 6/1/2008 11:56:31 AM
Glad you guys like it!

Teeny tiny edit: I didn't realize I was counting the 1 pixel black border Photoshop adds in with the caption, so I gave it a little bit more room.

dakael, I felt that a more random font would look more organic and fit better with the rest of the scene, and I wanted the ground to have some texture to separate it from the background. I'll experiment with the dithering and see if I can come up with something that works better.

Ricki (Level 1 Seaman) at 6/1/2008 11:47:59 AM
It needs no more words ...simply beatiful ... I will add to favorites and you'll get 5/5 from me... Great job ...

Trinus (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/1/2008 11:42:33 AM
awesome piece. You did a great job on the colours. :)

Godslayer (Level 2 Corporal) at 6/1/2008 11:26:05 AM
Good stuff, I'm studying that foliage.

Peach (Level 5 Soldier) at 6/1/2008 10:43:16 AM
very good! I love colors nice contrast

RoboBOT (Level 6 Commander) at 6/1/2008 10:30:32 AM
That's excellent.  The only thing I would change is to make the knot look like a noose (but that's just me being picky :D ). Well done. With so many good entries in this challenge, I don't think I'll be voting for my own!

dakael (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 6/1/2008 10:29:12 AM
Marvelous background and tomato on the foreground. But dithering on the ground doesn't seem to be a good choice because it looks overdithered now. And I don't like this font too - first idea for text was much better. Please fix these and this will be one of the best pixels here

Stitchy (Level 6 SWAT) at 6/1/2008 10:17:27 AM
OMG. Simply amazing, my friend. D8
