It's a pixelled reproduction of Alan Craddock' (a known sci-fi illustrator) graphics. I put his picture on the right side on my monitor, and created a pixelled version, pixel by pixel, only by my hand. It took me a lot of weeks to finish, because I created it in a high resoultion. Anyway, this is really old graphics, when I used to had a lot of free time :-) 256 colors used and Personal Paint 7 (Amiga).

The shadowing really makes it look like metal, awesome.

And I agree that pixel art really isnt (and never were) making of 16x16x8col grass tiles and jap-rpg-like characters forever, as lots of (sadly not only) newbs seem to think !

Riva (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 2/26/2006 7:24:14 AM
I think the most controversial piece from Slay. Regarding quality not is\isnt hand pixelled.

Its huge and still full of details. Must have taken a year to create. Kudost for that.

What I dont like is colors choice - far too saturated for me.
Whats definetly and very wrong is definiton of shapes. The anatomy of figures, related objects and shadows.

Btw Amiga resolution indeed is 320x256 and 640x512. 320x200 and 320x240 are PC thing (and actually are shit compared to Amiga lo-res standard).

Not really wanting to get into the is it or isn't it discussion.

But the stuff you're saying about  pixel art not being sprites, it can be more.  Yes it can.. But I don't really thing pixel reproductions of someone else's art  is really that more.  Did you just draw directly over the images?

Scruffs (Level 6 Made) at 2/18/2006 7:26:06 PM

slay, if you want to prove that you can do these images hand pixeled, why dont you use a different program that does not have these tools at your disposal and record it with a webcam mkay?

If you were a bit more astute you'd realize that your arguments hold no merit with the pixel art veterans.  Your immature put downs towards simplistic game art do not give you a good reputation and make you look very egotistical.

Now i haven't used the program you use so I'm just taking the respectable pixel artists' word for it, but if you want to end this ongoing quarrel over the credibility of your work, do what i said in the beginning of this post or confess.

Also, if this can just be done in photoshop or whatnot then wouldn't pixeling this be rather pointless, unless your doing it just to say you could.  Which seems very time wasting.  Why don't you try making some gameart before you pass it off as "not creative."  That isn't the smartest thing to say to an entire community of pixelers.

Slay, no one has any right to talk to anyone else that way.

PS: No, it's not "100% hand-pixeled". And really, pixel art is about seeing how anal you can be about slight imperfections. You zoom in, you fix a pixel or two, zoom out, repeat. You didn't do this. There are MANY areas that were never anti-aliased at all. "Hand pixeled"? If by that you mean that you used a mouse, then okay.

A piece such as this shows what can be accomplished by dedication, patience and determination. Love it, as always.

Slay's got quite the ego

Anyway, whether it's 100% pixeled or not, the details on this are pretty impressive.  The biggest problem I see is that the shading makes the characters look really flat, like cardboard cutouts standing up in a hallway.  Look at  the leftmost guy's torso.

Other than that, it's good. Looks like you put a lot of effort into this.

slay (Level 1 Rookie) at 1/1/2006 4:11:07 AM
E-Magination: You are a really  funny lamer... You even don't know the sizes of Amiga screens. 320 x 200 is not a standard resolution, but 320 x 256 (lo-res) is. And Amiga has also a hi-res resolution: 640 x 512... In this one I've pixelled Zipper Blues. I pixelled in on Amiga 1200 which - as you surely don't know - has an AGA graphics chipset (640 x 512, 256 colors).

PIXEL ART is not only creating poor 4 colors sprites in 20 x 20 size. It can be something more, but you have to be more creative
. I  also suggest you to change your nick, "SMALL-Emagination" will fit the best....

TheChaindog (Level 4 Murderer) at 11/19/2005 4:45:40 AM

Might be a bad habbit of mine, but I always zoom in  with your work to check if it really is pixelart.

Impressive.

o___________O wow!

HMC (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 10/6/2005 2:13:18 PM
Christ, that's impressive.

Blick (Level 6 Commander) at 6/15/2005 6:54:04 PM
I don't like the black outlined dark stripe connecting the wall and ceiling, especially since the black line often borders much lighter colors towards the "back" and makes it look jagged. That's very minor though.

Another thing is that I don't understand how the baddie on the right is holding whatever he's holding, but that's the original artist's problem.

Skit (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/15/2005 6:24:45 AM
You did have alot of time on your hands!
