This definitely needs something to give it more depth. And the black outline on the non-roof part of the house is too harsh and makes the house look even flatter...

Yeah, somehow it works a bit better with pokemon roofs, maybe there's a secret there.

Indeed. This looks great, though I'd do something to give it a sense of depth, perhaps sloped sides/roof.
