Just in time... for the challenge
Last 20 minutes were spent feverishly clicking around, so excuse stray pixels and jaggy edges should you find any.

The idea is that it resembles an atomic mushroom cloud. Always had these thoughts about civilization resetting itself once again. Also, mushrooms are recyclers of nature's garbage, so I found it fitting :D

edit: made a proper thumbnail previe

Perfect. The sky is beautiful, and the colors work really well together. Really nice style, too.

skittle (Level 9 Nidan) @ 5/14/2014 06:09

Probably one of my favorite pieces on here. The colours are incredible, it doesn't even look like pixel art, more like a painting.

Sorry for sort of necroposting, but I just stumbled on this and had to say it absolutely took my breath away. I don't think I've ever been so moved by a piece of pixel art before. I'm not 100% sure why, but thanks regardless.

user
iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 2/13/2009 03:23
@Conzeit: Do you really think I made this by accident? ;D Yeah, I'm quite fond of  McKenna, RAW or Bill Hicks

user
Conzeit (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/12/2009 22:52
You should read Terrence Mckenna...understand the real symbology of what you did here...hahahah.
Archetypes, they're bigger than  me or you

user
Yellow Snow (Level 1 Private) @ 7/6/2008 20:41
Good job, there should be shadows of the mushroom top on the stem and the whole thing on the ground?

user
natsukilove2 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/6/2008 20:02
Amazing color usage, concept, details and overall execution! Luv it!

user
Zweckform (Level 1 Intern) @ 7/5/2008 10:26
Great stuff here, 16 colours ? Wow. Ideas behind it  A+ :-)

user
SNickau (Level 1 Depressed) @ 7/5/2008 07:16
This is wonderful, the mushroom cloud meaning is very inspired, it is also brought across quite clearly - I didn't feel an explanation was needed. The art is also astounding. Very nice.

user
Expand (Level 3 Stalker) @ 7/4/2008 01:48
It looks like a painting. Amazing. The thought behind the mushroom is extremely creative.

user
Fuzzyleaves (Level 5 Detective) @ 7/3/2008 21:49
Vote for #1, I voted because of the double meaning, very cool pixel.

user
MashPotato (Level 7 Underboss) @ 7/3/2008 19:07

user
homosapien (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/1/2008 10:51
Nearly perfect, hand pixelled picture of an Amanita Muscaria growing out of a city. iKke, I like you a lot.

user
Arachne (Level 4 Murderer) @ 7/1/2008 09:11
I think the hat of the mushroom would look rounder if you moved the darkest shadow in towards the center as much as the highlight is positioned away from the center, and then have the sky illuminate the part between that and the edge. Apart from that, I think the washed out palette really gives a sense of dimension to this, and I'm amazed at how well the crumpled buildings read despite being so small. Nicely done.

user
zAk (Level 3 Stalker) @ 7/1/2008 08:07
Awesome - i remember i once pshopped a photo of San Francisco together with a photo of an orange Jellyfish from an aquarium. 5/5 fav'd

user
Arfff (Level 3 Enforcer) @ 7/1/2008 03:09
I'm speechless! This is good taste plus excellent technique, times great concept...
So when are we gonna get iLKke as a featured pixel artist with an interview 'n' all? :)

user
iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 7/1/2008 02:54
Thanks, ppl!  *blush*
I'll put up a WIP when I have time.

@Fool: I know ;) I thought the fact that amanita is a symbol of spiritual rebirth is a nice touch. It is also closely tied to New Year/Christmas, which is not only a symbol of renewal and rebirth, but is probably the only festivity still celebrated by all people on Earth.

@Mirage: That is flattering, but the truth is that I made almost the entire picture in one sitting, and there was no time for polish. Amanita should actually have an 'egg' that it grows from, I just went for the simple option. There are dozens of other things I would have tweaked as well. Meh. MAYBE after the challenge is over.

user
Fool (Level 6 SWAT) @ 7/1/2008 01:39
Nice=)   Metaphor is even more interesting  - if prepaired properly those are very strong hallucinogene.=)

user
Doomcreator0 (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 6/30/2008 17:57
