purpletree (Level 6 Manager) @ 7/23/2008 13:01
i'll have a think about what you've said and what others have said about this piece,

if i do decide to keep it in my gallery i'll change and edit it so it doesn't look so plain.

thanks purpletree

No matter what people say Purpletree, keep in mind that's gonna appear every time someone views your profile. Might not be a great idea for first impressions, but it's your choice whether to keep it or not.

As far as artistic choices are concerned however, I think you could have done something with it - stick it on an arm, as if it were a soldiers' armband, apply some shading as if it were a flag, etc.

Don't get put down by the angry comments though. For some people, the symbol evokes a lot of emotion as their family or country may have been affected by it, but perhaps you didn't know so much about it so you had a perfectly good reason to think it's acceptable.

Finally, in reply to grim666's comment, no the swastika isn't a sign of luck. It was based off hinduisms' sign for luck and goodness, but the arms' directions were reversed.

Cheers BD.

Put aside the controversy for one minute:  To me this piece lacks imagination.  If you wanted to use the symbol then it could have put it onto a 3D flag, a soldier's arm, anything but to use it as just a plain symbol is disappointing.  The swastika isn't really a war symbol in my opinion, it's a ideological symbol and unless it was used on a flag/soldier/tank it doesn't really suggest war, just fascism generally.

Technically, to me the white circle doesn't look round enough, the AA is a bit light to make a difference.

You have a few very nice pieces but this one seems to spoil your gallery.

She. She's only 14 =)

Purpletree, please try to challenge yourself in the future, and think before you submit. I'm not saying that it's bad, just that you should think of what people might think.

Larwick (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 7/22/2008 07:52
All those who swore, used aggressive language or were generally unconstructive just now will be recieving an unofficial strike (Sporknife, SynZygfryda & eyeball). There is absolutely no need to get aggressive, how about you explain to the kid what she's done 'wrong' in a calm, polite and constructive manner. It's sick that you act like this, she's only 14.

HoofFoot (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 7/22/2008 07:25
I agree it's not the most original idea for the challenge, but I don't get why people get so aggressive over it. The challenge is about war themed icons and this is a war themed icon.

Don't get me wrong, I know why people would avoid submitting this piece and I can see why they would get upset, but hiding the ugly facts under the carpet and freaking out when you see a historical symbol won't help anyone. This is not a bad piece, not because it has a nazi swastika that has come to symbolize all the horrible things that came of WWII (unlike the original symbol of good luck and peace) or because of anything else related, but like I said before, it's not very creative or original and the black corners of the piece are an eyesore.

Generally speaking, people are too aggressive about history, especially if it has something to do with WWII or September 11.

Of course when I saw what the challenge was about, I was half expecting someone to do a swastika and I was also pretty sure it would cause an uproar. It was brave of you to submit this, but don't think I'm complimenting you for it.

eyeball (Level 1 Private) @ 7/22/2008 02:39
But it's quite stupid some random guy already favourited it, don't you think so?

purpletree (Level 6 Manager) @ 7/22/2008 02:10

THe only reason i drew this is because it is a war icon, and the symbol has caused a lot of pain for people in this world, i know that and i understand that a lot of people will think that it is wrong but i didn't mean any bad things about it, i only drew it because it is a war icon... and i don't think you should have to be so aggresive about it ok. even if you think that it's f****** easy to draw, i spent my time on in and tried to make it look good ok.

eyeball (Level 1 Private) @ 7/22/2008 02:06

Check the nazism site at wikipedia, then draw shit like that. Also it doesnt actually need any skills to draw 3 lines and draw a white circle around it, and it's NOT a good topic. Greetings from Poland.

SynZygfryda (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/22/2008 01:13
I agree with Lurnon about this Fav.

Lurnon (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/22/2008 00:58
I really have to agree with Sporknife and SynZygfryda to draw the "Hakenkreuz" is one of the things somebody should not do when there isn't any aim (moral, scientific) connected with doing so. And I allege that there is no bigger meaning to this picture than just showing it in order to win the competition. That is no accusation, but my opinion. Nothing the "Hakenkreuz/Swastika" symbolizes is/was good or valuable for the world.
By the way your edit says what you didn't wanted to but the fact is, that you drew it.
Yes you can say "just drawing the Hakenkreuz does not do something bad, bad things happen when people do inhuman things, a picture can't do that", but drawing it just for showing it increases the way of the Swastika becoming something ordinaray and trivial and that should not happen.
I'm German and I know what my country did under this symbol and I'm not proud of it as you can believe for sure.
So all in all it's your decision whether to delete it or not.

p.s.: Even if I can accept or tolerate that somebody draw something like that I find it disgusting that someone already took it as favorite image.

grim666 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/22/2008 00:57
Take the AA off the black and its finished.  And never feel like you offend people its just art and the Swastika is  hindu for luck, so it didn't really help Hitler at all his dead so people get over it:)  I think H.R. Gigger's work is why more offensive then a Swastika.  good one.

SynZygfryda (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/21/2008 23:56
In my opinion it is to fuckin' easy to draw, so just erase this nazi shit from this page and draw a tank. Read more about nazizm and think again when You want to draw this symbol. Best regards from Poland.

DJD (Level 4 Button Man) @ 7/21/2008 21:53
honestly I wouldn't AA it so much. The Swastika is a powerful symbol and bit harder cut edges would certainly give it the cold strength it possesses. Good idea though, a icon of war should evoke emotions of anger strife and sadness and the swastika is perfect for that.

purpletree (Level 6 Manager) @ 7/21/2008 20:03
It somehow looked better....

Amorphous (Level 3 Sergeant) @ 7/21/2008 18:26
I'm interested in why you anti-aliased some parts and didn't in others.

purpletree (Level 6 Manager) @ 7/21/2008 14:24
well i wasn't intending to offend anyone ok. If i did i'm sorry i didn't mean anything.

Sporknife (Level 2 Peon) @ 7/21/2008 14:15
[sarcasm] This is the best idea for an icon ever. Nobody is going to be offended by this [/sarcasm]
