This is an atomic mushroom i did for a flash project. It is 48 frames, and 16 colors (15+ transparency). One day i will make an explosion like the one of Metal Slug!
EDIT: I did it totally by hand in the beginning, then the deadline was too close, so i started to use "shade" and "smear" brushes (ProMotion 6) to finish faster. But i only used ProMotion to do this.

Sarà anche ibrido come dice Jalonso, ma l'effetto è allucinante. Proprio una bella esplosione! Complimenti. Io uso mac e sfortunatamente ProMotion non c'è, devo arrangiarmi con Photoshop...
Its a case by case basisi and most likely not accepted because once you bend the rules every pixelart after that hangs on to the previous until it gets out of hand. Its happened before so being extra anal/nazi about it makes safe for all. This situation happens often so nothing is personal here. I did warn you, remember ;)
Ok! I understand your point. So, if i make hybrid pixelart like this, i should not post it here? Or maybe i post it anyway but report the tools i used?
Here is the deal as the PJ Mod team sees this issue to make it fool proof for all.
Yes, tool use does happen and in commercial projects where deadlines are everything this does happen. These we call hybrid PAs and nothing is wrong with them. Howver, PJ is about PA and only PA. We all learn and get inspired by each other and since creative expression is unique to all then realistically only technical can be judged. The simplest PA technique IS the pencil tool used to pixel one pixel at a time. Dithering, AA, and other techniques are used to refine areas and also come into play. Graphic software will not use the pencil tool for you automatically, this you must do yourself, right? Graphic software WILL dither and AA for you therefore all dithering and AA must be made by hand to be pixelart. Still with me? If yes, then all must be made with the pencil tool, one pixel at a time. If no, then it is not PA worthy of PJ gallery addition because it only serves to teach others bad habits and the entire point of having PJ is moot. Hybrids, tool use, demoscene, etc. are all fine and nothing is wrong with them. PJ just decides to keep things pure for the sake of the community. I, myself, make hybrid pixelart often and even make money off it. These I show in my own website and other places but never here because they are not made OPAAT. I always simplify the matter by saying that Michelangelo's art would never be allowed at the Museum of Modern Art not because its not art, awesome, etc. but because its not Modern. It's that simple.
Manuz - I agree with you. However ... having had this very discussion with some of my own work around these parts a bit in the past ... trust me, don't attempt to discuss it! People's opinions on what constitutes "pixel" art vary/differ depending on who you ask but here at PJ it's "EVERY pixel laid down 1 at a time with NO tools used what-so-ever!" and while people like Jal will be cool and help explain you'll get a lot of doosh-bags who get all uppity about it and it's just annoying (and not worth your time, trust me!). :)
Ok, as i said i was close to deadline. Anyway i cannot understand a thing: if you can use a dither brush (for example), will you use it? And why (why yes or why not)?
Only to understand your point of view.
Personally, i used deluxe paint on amiga, and "shade" and "smear" brushes were already there, and i think that many old school pixel artists used them. And these are brushes, i must use them with my hand and mouse. I think they're not cheating, because i know how to achieve the same effect totally by hand. But i save time in this way.
I think this is a long discussion... move to forum?
Or you could just type it in the language that 99.9% of the people on here type in ... I suppose 99.9% should be inconvenienced over the other 0.1% ... makes sense.
Anyway ... my initial reaction was "there's no way this is done by hand" ... if it was, then it's incredible! It not, it's still really cool but less impressive!
I wanted to work more on this. At some point, i had to close this piece because we had a deadline, so there are many parts that i don't like much, or i wanted to do in a different way. Maybe the next time!
