This has tallpixels like the old amiga mode, but is inspired by the art that the wonderful Dreamforge studios did on games like Menzoberranzan, Ravenloft and so on. 32 colors chosen out of a 24bit selection. I received much help on this by awesome Pixelation people, especially Salvage, Rosse, Turbo. Thank you guys a lot! Follow the thread here!

I am interested in a specific emotion here, not just rendering quality and such. I'd be glad if the comments would tell me if I was successful in capturing the quality the name of the piece suggests.

What I like most about this, is how long it took me to notice that you used "tall" pixels. It shows that you didn't just go into paint and click stretch, but put lots of thought into it. Really, really good job.

(I never read the description ;P)

orenshtiv (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 7/16/2009 1:33:03 PM

wow cool!,it's really good for long pxls :D

MrSmiley (Level 1 Thug) at 7/14/2009 6:46:02 PM

Wow. Absolutely breathtaking. I like how the character's skin is a bit grayish, as if he were a zombie.

alones (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/2/2009 10:16:20 PM

This is soooo awesome... Really pro.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 1/13/2009 5:24:56 PM
Mathias, thank you for the kind words and also for taking the time to analyze the artistic choices.

Mathias (Level 2 Kukyu) at 1/13/2009 9:42:20 AM

The character appears to be in a very sour mood. It's easy to believe he's plotting revenge. He's obviously very preoccupied with something he's pondering - two biggest clues are the dumped stein which he doesn't even bother to set back upright due to heavy distraction and, even moreso, his hands, their position and the way they're gnarled together is very unusual, the type of maneurism only common for a person who's mind is elsewhere and  may not even realize he's doing it, and/or he's currently popping his fingers' joints, which also indicates a pensive moment.

Additionally, I can appreciate the conceptual effort here - the moody environment matches the human emotions that govern the piece. Revenge is an ugly negative malicious emotion so it's almost as if the dark and dank environment represents the charcters mind.

REALLY good, Helm.

It's "Feel Good Inc.". And I don't think there is any connection between this and that. =D
For me work is just grate. Why? I think I would never be able to create such a amazing piece of bitmap. =)

Rooster (Level 5 Captain) at 10/5/2008 2:04:43 AM
For me, it's associating videoclip - Gorillaz - Feel Good :P

khobby (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/4/2008 5:37:01 PM
...This should be in the "Hall of Fame"...

Souly (Level 4 Murderer) at 10/4/2008 2:12:17 PM
Holy crap background.
I was missing so much of this piece...

Kudos helm most excellent as always.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 10/4/2008 10:47:11 AM
Everybody loves the trousers! Thank you for the kind words, tomic. I do suggest that your future reference for trousers however be actual real life trousers and not the ones here.

How much you can see the background is an issue of monitor calibration most of all. Not saying all yours suck heh, it might be mine being a bit too bright or a bit less Gamma than would be optimal.

tomic (Level 11 CEO) at 10/4/2008 10:39:38 AM

great to see it finished. loved it from the first minute, though the background is still totally sucked out by window's/pj's bright enviroment.. even in fullscreen you have to take a very close look to the notice that onion-rope for example

beside the common awesomeness in terms of anatomy: awesome job on the trowsers, probably THE reference for future trowser-pieces. still i've got a final nitpick concerning the weapons - i feel that the smaller knifes stand out a bit too much - at least the backmost two should have some shadow over it

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 10/4/2008 10:30:31 AM
I know about artistic fear of empty spaces (and suffer from it somewhat!) but fear of straight lines? Heh, I really don't mind them.

Thanks for the comment, enjoy your new monitor!

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 10/4/2008 8:28:55 AM
I love this piece, but the straight edges of his closest upper arm near his elbow and the top of his inner, closest knee really bug me. I noticed you're not afraid (as i am) to use straight lines in more realistic/detailed pieces such as this, but i think sometimes they become too visible and distracting. It's almost as if someone's gone in and sliced some chunks out of those areas to me.

One great thing about this piece for me was after i bought my new monitor, realising there was a background too. :P
Great work, lovely colours.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 10/4/2008 8:18:49 AM
I banned you from Pixelation for posting too many one-liners.

Elk (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 10/4/2008 5:42:19 AM
I wanted to give critique but unfortunately someone banned me from Pixelation.
IMO the legs and other parts of the body needs to be darker to get a better ambient and more emotion.
The man in this picture seems to think of his past and his fights that he won over the decades, he seems rather depressive hence he's drinking beer obviously...but he also looks angry! :)
Nice work tho...

Christoballs (Level 1 Depressed) at 10/4/2008 4:33:40 AM
I would say it's all up to the eyebrows =P.
I think that his shoulders should go inwards (if you see what I mean ^^"), to give an idea of privacy, and his arms clenched a little. His legs seem relaxed; I think you should focus on one element in particular, for example the legs... Up to you.
Anyway very good picture ;)

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 10/3/2008 1:02:14 AM
Thanks for the comments. ShonenAiGuy, don't despise me :O

withalligators (Level 4 Deputy) at 10/2/2008 8:36:36 PM

You and your dang greens and greys...

composition wise: love the mullet and anachronistic pants, not sure if I like the swords...  its wonderful.

ShonenAiGuy (Level 3 Enforcer) at 10/1/2008 5:03:35 PM
Once again Helm does a killer pixel art.
The only thing I would have changed is somehow give his jaw more of a 'clenched look', teeth barred is too typical but a jutted jaw would allow you to see anger beneath the surface.
Also his shoulders are fallen, he almost looks defeated, where as if he were angry, or revenge seeking, they'd be more tense.
Also his hands could be clenched but again that's typical...

He's beautiful Helm, I despise you for your abilities. Kidding.

Redshrike (Level 4 Deputy) at 9/29/2008 1:11:35 PM
I'm also glad that you kept that right (his right) knee squarish; it gives him a very lanky feel, almost like he has Marfan syndrome.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/29/2008 10:36:33 AM
Well I don't think 'evil blood-lust' exists as an emotion outside of bad cinema so sadness and despair are much more what I want, so thank you for your impressions, Darth. Turbo also thought that shoulder was misplaced in the Pixelation thread and whereas I see what you both mean I opted to not change it because if you see his edit, if you put both shoulders on the same guideline it changes the body language a lot!

Darth Mandarb (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 9/29/2008 10:23:56 AM
If I am being honest the over-all 'feeling' I get from this is "sadness" or maybe "despair".  He feels lost to me ... unsure... like he just lost a good friend and doesn't know how to deal with it.  This works well in the plotting of revenge if it's the 'unsure what to do' kind of revenge (maybe that was your intention?) but not if it's the 'evil blood-lust' kind of plotting :)

The technique is brilliant (and I totally dig the square-ish look to it).  The [his] left shoulder feels a tad out of line/perspective/proportion (not sure the word to use) but the pants, weapons, face, lighting/shadows ... all top notch.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/29/2008 9:00:47 AM
I've always been partial to Vonar personally!

asukicco (Level 7 Ichikyu) at 9/29/2008 8:57:08 AM
Absolutely wonderful! In the first link, Yemeth is the man, by the way.

abra71 (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 9/29/2008 8:36:47 AM
looks awsome
but like lollige said it's too squary at some places

but who cares?
5/5 + fav'd !

Redshrike (Level 4 Deputy) at 9/28/2008 7:49:11 PM
Awesome stuff, though I have to zoom in and tilt my monitor to see the background.  I know you intended that for thematic...ness, but it still seems a bit dark to me.
5/5, fav'ed

skeddles (Level 11 Psychopath) at 9/28/2008 5:28:11 PM
That's sooo damn cool. You gets award for best 1x22x1 pixel piece. Actually, this  deserve's monthly top #1. Really great job, looks like a picture. But better.

Lollige (Level 11 Psychopath) at 9/28/2008 2:32:05 PM
I see some setzerness in it! (look it up in your dictiona.. nah you better not)
It seems a bit squary at some places (which I don't like that much) but the rest of the picture and the colors (and the awesome use of double pixels) really make this a very nice pixel art helm :)
