I changed the nose and made the skull look rounder.

I agree about the creepiness. Especially your description...
The shading on the skull is a bit flat. I feel like the white highlight wouldn't be just a line on the top (like you have) but rather an oval sort of blob on the forehead (google image search a skull and take a look how the light hits the forehead). I like the background, though.
