Something similar to this happened to my X's mother.

She worked in a butcher shop in her younger years, and when she over-fed the meat grinder, it crushed her index finger. They had to drill a hole in the nail to relieve the pressure. She has a permanant dark line that grows out of the center of the nail now. Lucky she didnt loose the finger.
