This is a prototype level for a game i was developing with a friend. Its been on hold for years. I made over 500 tiles for it that can be layered. This level was made using the editor we made for the game. The civilians follow you like ducks in a row towards rescue points and you can blow away the monkeys with hails of bullets. You can also drive the cars around and run them over. The tank can shoot. Also the hot dog van can shoot the hot dog as a controllable missile. Its pretty awesome. It gets really gory since the gore stays for the rest of the time on the map and the monkeys spawn in like crazy smash-tv style (there are also cows, giant gorillas, and giant slugs). These types of monkeys in this screen shot have their brains exposed and carry laser guns. We never got the enemy guns working though. There really was no palette limitation because its pixel art as style not as necessity. We were well on our way but this game really has a lot of work left to go before it can be finished. My friend just had a baby so i dunno... lol but maybe one day we will get back to it. Thats probably what happens to 99% of indie projects isn't it? :)

The placement of the the characters by algorithms is fine so long as they're all hand pixelled. The cars and grass, on the other hand, need to be 100% by hand. Shrinking down and reworking them is fine, so long as you FULLY repixel them. By zooming in I can still see many of them are a bit messy (same as the grass). So these elements will need to be revisited before it's gallery acceptable.
what is NPA? non-pixel art? sorry i am new here. If so, yes you are right about the cars. They were rendered from 3D as simpler shapes and then i drew over them by hand at the pixel level so to keep perspective over all the vehicles... i think i made like 25 including the weird gray shape in the lower right quadrant - which are the legs of a mech that isnt working properly in this screen shot and is missing the top part hahaha so its correct that the cars i made with a sort of rotoscoped pixel art. I can't remember how i made it but yea the grass looks like I generated it with some kind of noise and then tweaked it by hand too - and finally - the placement of the soldiers, civilians, and monkeys was determined by AI algorithms, and not myself by hand. Hopefully these facts don't disqualify this piece from being shown here.
to morning Dew: the cars have 8 directions, so they turn and drive. The roads though... are ultimately irrelevant lol you just drive over whatever is not "building" i tried to keep collidable things warm, non-collidable things cool colored.
to dogmeat: unfortunately we never got far enough to have a distributable demo. the game editor does allow for cut scenes though which is pretty cool. =) but no we never got as far as having anything cohesive enough to distribute.
thanks for all your nice comments, given more time im sure this project would have made a very fast paced crazy game.
cure, and Morning Dew, If you zoom in, a lot, I think you'll find the grass and the cars only seem to be tool use and NPA. I spent quite a bit of time inspecting before I added it to the gallery.
