Hmm, you have a point. That blue would make it look colder, but at the same time do I risk it making the place look cleaner? If I'm going to make other rooms (Which I think I will for sure) then I would definitely be taking your advice into account, and I'd probably have to alter this room to match wouldn't I? : )
You could actually accentuate the coldness by putting a bit of blue in the grays. It'd definitely maintain that sterile look while giving an overall cold feeling. In your preview the grays are very warm, and that's simply by shifting them closer to the red end of the spectrum.
It sounds to me like you're probably done with this piece, but next time I suggest you try and control your palette a little bit more, and maybe play with the power of color a bit. There are some nice threads on pixelation about color theory and such. :)
Doppleganger: Honestly I don't know how I got so many colors either, I just checked how many there were in Photoshop by indexing the image. ;x I'm not entirely certain that number is correct, but I was really excited last night and wanted to get this online as soon as possible. You're right about it being overly monochrome, I could add some more color, but I think I'd lose the effect I was going for. Yes, it's gray because it's Belch's place, but also because I wanted to achieve a cold, harsh look. I think it accentuates that this place is not just a factory, but also a prison, and an unhappy place. I think the added color would take away from that a little, and make it just seem like something to explore. I was inspired a little bit by the meat locker in Half Life actually, which I've been playing recently. That place gave me the heebie-jeebies for some reason.
That said, feel free to borrow the idea! I'd be honored. :)
Johnny: Me too! I thought that the Mario theme they mixed into their battle theme was hilarious, especially considering how grody they were. I could totally envision a slobbed out Mario watching TV in his underwear, all greasy and stuff. x3 I was debating on whether or not to put one in here but I thought it might be overkill. Plus, without a Mr. Saturn in there, it would have nothing to be monitoring.
This is pretty neat! I'm a big fan of Earthbound, so naturally I have to like it.
I might be tempted to borrow your idea, so don't feel bad if I do, okay?
I think that this piece is sufffering from lack of color, however. The things you have added color to look really neat. Specifically the present. I'm not sure how you managed to use 33 colors, but it looks like you could easily accomplish what you have with just 16, or maybe even 12.
I know Belch's Lair is pretty monochrome, but you could always add a little bit of color to the grays and still keep them gray.
