I really like the concept. Adding more contrast and a background would help convey a more appropriate mood, especially since the point-of-view is from someone standing on the deck of the ship that the sea monster is destroying.
needs a sky. otherwise not bad, though I wonder why the pole supporting the crow's nest is bent as it is. The crow's nest itself seem a little too uneven and too rounded on the bottom. Water could use some work, and I think changing the purple used in the water to a dark blue would make it look more watery and also separate it more from the tentacle. Also, I noticed with the tentacle you've just shaded the edge a uniform amount all the way around. I'd use the various shades to get your volumes down first, then go in once you're pleased with that and do the stylized dithering.

i really don't know how to dither cause i use paint and have no idea how to contrast or any of that. i guess i'm retarded lol
