I think there's some neat stuff in here, particularly the texture of the rock walls that are facing us. I agree that it's tough to see which level is which, and I think changing the color of the ground for the higher plains would help that a lot. Looks like a good exercise in any case.
Thanks guys for all the comments. Heyy13 - I've never been able to blend things together, to make it look like the objects a people belong. But I'm trying to improve, I got heaps of years ahead of me!
DJD - I never did play golden sun or have even seen it. I don't really know what the inspiration/reference was, I just made the tiles without anything to go on.
Badassbill - Yes my palettes really lack life, but I can never seem to make a good one.
Shiny - It's dirt between the rocks and the sand, not grass.
I'm wondering, what was your inspiration/references for this? It's giving me a big golden sun vibe, at least in terms of the tiles. Don't get me wrong, I like goldensun. I don't have any particular critiques on the tiles themselves, but I would like to commend your sense of construction. Most mockups have great tiles but suffer from lackluster construction, but this one has a great sense of realism and complication without feeling overbearing or systematic.
My biggest issue is the readability. It's verry difficult to tell which level your character is on easily. So you can't see what corrosponding features are on the same level as him without thinking about it.
Which when playing a game with those graphics would get highly irritating. I'll also wow at the amount of coloures, but other than that i like it. I especially like the rock edges, and the sence of depth you have been able to acheive with the walls, even if the mono coloured flooring kills it. ;D
