It was going to be textured onto a 3D surface so yea.

This is really nice, I enjoy your style, it varies from the black outlines i normally like. as soon as I looked at that gorilla it instantly reminded me of cartoon ape by wolverine http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/3108.htm, is that a connection or just a coincidence?

edit: i noticed a highlight on the brightest/closest to us tree, it sticks out on the background, I thought it might be a mistake.correct me if i'm wrong

These are old non-tiled terrain.
It was just shape and I slapped a repeating image on it.

And yes cavestory was an "influence"
