It.. is... DONE!

A bit larger piece than my last few...
I decided to test the new grafx2, and this is what came out in the end. Seems that the program is pretty nice :D Check it out at http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/

Took me a while to finish it. I'm not used to 16 colors per spread anymore. Think I'll stick to 8 to 10 in the future. Enjoy.

edit: Significantly improved the palette, and fixed some tiny bits as well. Thanks to everyone who helped.
You can check the old version here

edit: Changed the palette a bit further, thanks to everyone at Pixelation who helped. Also cleaned up some bits and made some invisible changes as well. Old version is at http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8907/rocklobster43sl7.gif

@bigbrother+all: what ilkke didn't want to say, cause it's a bit embarrasing: that unused color is an old demoscene superstition/ritual: an oblation to a higher power, the scene spirit =)

.. and i don't think, that the planet looks like a sliced blutwurst.

user
ui_ (Level 4 Deputy) @ 2/4/2009 12:14
iLKke, inspiring as always!... you monster!!!..... and ye!... that grafx2 pretty nice app :X...and the most important... FREE!! XD... just a suggest... maybe you should try with different colors, i mean, like something on "red" or "blue", i know that colors you have actually are kind of darkness purple/red but i mean more bright... that is for make the art ever more interesting by adding just 1 or 2 "solid" colors, but it just my crappy suggest, dont take me to serious! :D.... thx for this amazing art...

user
iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 2/4/2009 11:35
@big brother: Yeh I actually pondered the breaking of monochrome look quite a bit. The pic is actually in 15 colors, cause I've kept one for an accent of sorts. I thought of perhaps using it as a skin tone for the little people but it turned out to be unnecessary. In the end I left it unused (akhem ;)
Also tried to make the impression that the robot and planet don't share the same colors, seeing how planet is all in darker colors where you can see the tinting, and the robot is so contrasted that it looks almost completely gray. I even tried changing one of the brighter grays into a reddish tone and got the effect of peeled paint, but then I thought maybe I'm just doing these things cause I got bored of looking at the pic while I was pixeling it and then I got all excited to submit it ASAP and left it this way. I think it has a bit of a vintage look like this, which goes nice with the clockwork bit.
I'll try a couple of things, including the blue eyes, but I only have one color to spare so it'll be tough :D
Perhaps I should start a topic over at Pixelation to see what can be done.

big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 2/4/2009 11:03
I was talking about this piece with my little bro, who also likes art. He suggested adding a color accent. I was thinking maybe make the inner ring in the eyes light blue or something. The contrast is enough to carry the focal piece alone, though. Maybe it's worth an experiment.

The texturing on the planet is delicious.

A big robot like that would undoubtedly make a lot of noise moving on such a small planet.

user
Mathias (Level 7 Junk) @ 2/4/2009 08:49

That is some stellar metal texturing/modeling, nice ramp. I love the planet's dry dirt texture and lighting.

Neat glimpse of another world.

cat of gold-like
the little guy is a great touch for the scale-feeling. i dig shape bluffing on the robots, it's a nice way to add details to compensate the emptyness of the background.
your pieces are more and more awesome !

I really like it! Cool!

user

The texture's great! Maybe add a few stars in the background would be nice.

Overall, it's nice work! Fav-ed! :D

iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 2/4/2009 01:59
@Skurwy: I tend to sketch or write down ideas as I get them 'cause they tend to come at a time when I cannot develop them and they often get forgotten. I also use dreams or other people's work for inspiration, sometimes just for the atmosphere, etc. Sometimes I do on purpose things that I would 'never' do, just to surprise myself.
@dogmeat: contour fill is a freehand draw that when you let go of the mouse fills your 'contour' with drawing color. Imagine drawing a shape, then filling it with the paint bucket tool, but all in one. I just got used to it long ago and the nice guys who develop GraFX2 (thanks, yrizoud!) just implemented it into the program. It just saves you a bit of clicking.

If you decide to sell Talent Potion with iLKkle essence in it, I'm buying it.
It's ... wow *speachless*

Skurwy87 (Level 6 Made) @ 2/3/2009 22:32
Hi there, Heathen! :)  Techniques aside, we all know you're good at it.  I wanted to ask you about something different.  The ideas.  I know it sounds like 12-year-old's speaking, but please explain me---for fuck's sake---where all those concepts come from?  You think those old eastern cartoons we all probably have been watching, have something to do with that? :) hehe  Man, you're just a robot, though a robot with heart -- technically, your pieces are painstakingly meticulous, yet you doesn't lose that good command of the aesthetic language -- when it comes to the reactions your works inspire, if you know what I'm saying.  Please don't stop.

Very fantastic pixels! I love the details and design.

Nice use for the extra shade of black=))

user
Broli (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 2/3/2009 19:23
This is officially my favorite pixel of yours thus far. The robot has a great emotion on its face. This piece has great colors and great depth in it. AA on this piece is so smooth, perfectly executed. Nicely done.

edit: I just noticed the people on the planet. Nice touch with that. :$

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 2/3/2009 15:50
Where's the photo that you shrunk down and indexed? Oh wait, this isn't "photorealistic pixel-art"! Using fewer than 250 colors should've tipped me off. ;)

Love the claws, they look so dangerous.

user
Phrozen (Level 1 Intern) @ 2/3/2009 15:03
Lovin the planet's texture :D

user
Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 2/3/2009 10:16
Full marks from me! Definitely a wonderful and detailed pic:) Would have been nice to have a few specular highlights on the planet to meld in a little with the robot. I really enjoy the detail on his forearms.

SO...have you found your comfortability factor more in tune with less than 16 colours?

Nice work:))

user
Defyn (Level 1 Thug) @ 2/3/2009 09:05
WOW... Get this piece to the Hall Of Fame as fast as possible! :D

Looks like digital art.

I love your textures. Huge fan of all your work.

user
iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 2/3/2009 04:22
@tomic: yeh, the robot is smoother than the planet. I got used to working in fewer colors so 16 seems too many and too smooth :P
@ptoing: you're welcome ;)

user
tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 2/3/2009 04:14

the 'biggish picture'. beautiful. diggin the small details on the edward squissorhands robot, tough some parts feel a bit too smooth, but meh.

i'm starting to understand one's enthusiasm for contourfills in grafx2 =D

Awesome stuff, and no doubt its your style!

user

Came out really nice :D Thanks for the Blutwurst!

Amazing rendering of the shadows. For some reason, I think I love the little people the most. I agree though, background would make a hell of a difference.

Bah, go away iLKke, your uber skills are putting us all to shame. Faved. :]

user
iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 2/3/2009 01:54
Thanks, peeps!

Now that someone's mentioned it, there ARE lighting inconsistencies, mainly because the robot was drawn first, with no real lightsource in mind. I love getting the dramatic effect of a single lightsource being very close and basically it looks as though I've used lots of little lights to light the robot. When I added the planet I had to try to make sense of the lights and shadows, but that wasn't really possible. Then again, the whole piece makes very little sense, so why would the lighting be sensible? :D
I made the pitch black bg on purpose. If I tried to add stars or stuff, it would make the pic more flashy, but would change the atmosphere.

user
Slemsvamp (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 2/3/2009 00:21
How? Damn you're so good, damn

user
Vital (Level 5 Sniper) @ 2/3/2009 00:09
You know what? You are just sick. I hate You,buddy,I hate You!;P
Faved again

user
Damian (Level 10 Operative) @ 2/2/2009 23:56
I love the simpleness of the backing.
Also if he were to add stars, wouldn't that be like a second light source?
Guys this guy needs to be interviewed! Where the hell is Jal!

user
Solitaire (Level 1 Depressed) @ 2/2/2009 23:42
have my babies please

Your skill hurts my brain. Amazing. :]

user
AdamF (Level 11 CEO) @ 2/2/2009 23:18
Oh just fuck it I give up

Jeez ilkke, this is great man. Just great. No stars, though? Who cares, I love it. I really need to chat with you sometime, damn. Fav'd.

user
Doppleganger (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 2/2/2009 22:58
Awwwwwwwesooome!

That's too cool!

I feel like there are random parts of the guy that are too flat, but I can't really notice any serious lighting inconsistencies. Odinno if that can count as a legitimate critique, but I'm throwing it your way anyways.

The planet itself is shaded and textured extraordinarily well, and that is the main reason this bad boy is getting fav'd. The colors on the planet should be acknowledged too. The hue-shifting works quite well, and it's refreshing to see it shift into the reds as darks from the lighter blue-purples.

Great work in my opinion. I think if I worked hard enough, I could pick the piece apart a bit more, but I'm gonna let it alone.

user
skooba-dude (Level 8 Guerrilla) @ 2/2/2009 22:24
I'm just going to say, the shading is outstanding, as usual, although I didn't recognise this as yours at first glance-maybe because of the sheer smoothness, I dunno. I wanna see a galaxy background!woot!. Right now the background just stops me from faving it,(8/8)

user
CaKsTeR (Level 3 Stalker) @ 2/2/2009 21:24
Insta-fave!

Awesome job, as usual

My only nit-pick is that the man on the bottom seems to need a bit more definition. Maybe it's just me. xD

user
Delfos (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 2/2/2009 20:52
It's beautiful. But I'm not faving it. I don't know why.

Oh, man, i'm so bad.

Almost EVIL.
