Perhaps not here, however there have been in other places outside of Pixel Joint during the time of this situation that kind of gave him a bit of noteriety amongst some stemming from this. And that's why I'm speaking from a more past tense at the beginning.

I say this having seen some posts from members in other communities *coughpixeltendocough* that don't really have much to do besides some of them having an account here that haven't directly posted in this chat discussion.

There are zero "elitists" sayng this is bad or doesn't qualify as pixel art.

user
DioShiba (Level 4 Shoggoth (The Mountains of Madness)) @ 7/20/2021 16:26

Honestly for every time that somehow a discussion about this whole incident comes up, even 12 years after the fact, this still actually qualifies as pixel art and it amazes me to this day that the whole situation gets referenced every now and then.

Had I been younger, I might have agreed with some elitists, and yet seeing who I am now I actually kind of relate to younger Paul Robertson after having been through a similar situation earlier this year for different reasons (go fig)

ANYHOW PUTTING ASIDE MY PERSONAL FEELINGS I don't just want to randomly bump this topic to say that but what I will say is looking back on some of Paul's works there is one thing that I will say knowing that he's probably not gonna read this but honestly this isn't a bad piece as a lot of people made it out to be then and given some of his other works have been more prominent in the industry over the past few years of knowing the name one of the things that I like about the guy is that he animates like a fucking beast in some of his other works and I don't think that his style is the absolute worst upon reflecting on the controversy and how a few other members felt then.

Was his reaction strong? perhaps, but honestly, hoping that now he's a bit older and more experienced maybe he would have changed by now. Shame he ain't here but hey, hoping that he's alright.

user
ui_ (Level 4 Deputy) @ 2/19/2009 00:31
well mister Paul, i just recomend you to do a 1 MILLION COLORS MONSTER for your next film! or a short film XD.... and a massive color monster comming to attack the heros and maybe the heros can be like "1 color hero", like thoses atari characters or something similar, to jump to the next level of power (like dragon ball z characters with his Super Saiyan) by adding more colors to the heros, and at the end are HI-RES HEROS. XD.... (just an idea stole it / use it!! if you want, i really dont care! XD)

and well to add more sauce.... about colors.... well it really depend of what ppl/artist etc etc is looking for. Really dont matter if you have 2, 100 or 10000 colors, obviously your not looking for 4 colors characters and of course you have several skills doing characters, drawing and doing animations. So anyone is free to do whatever with any tool / technique etc etc... But of course as some ppl said, its really impresive when you have an awesome art with just few colors in the same way of a tons of smooths animation. I like any thoses ways...

and an off topic question... is there any way to have your dvd? or whatever media on real, i mean, not digital, in a cd or dvd?. But since im in venezuela, its kinda hard to get stuff like that around here, is there any way to get it?

nice to see you around here and see than you are a mortal! :D... i was thinking you were a some kind of CYBORHUMAN, who draw 34384 frames per character in 1 minute jajaja... but i was wrong! seens like your a mortal :P

thx for your art and for share all for free :D... i enjoy it a lot. (sorry about my english)

i think thats the point that everyone is missing.

The image represents the duality of birthday parties, the eternal struggle between unwrapping the presents or eating the cake first......................................................

Control is seen as a very important part of pixel art since the medium is about having control over the smallest visible unit of an image. Having 100+ colors in an image that looks like it has 32 looks like a lack of control from the author, so peoples' reactions are legitimate I think.
On the other hand. you can have complete control over your image without caring about the colors, so I also think you have every right to not give a fuck about color count. That picture doesn't look like it uses photoshop filters or blurs or whatever and looks clearly like pixel art., so no need to be anal about colors I think!

PanicBomber (Level 6 Manager) @ 2/14/2009 09:45
hehe this is nice :Dd

user
Baz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/13/2009 16:16
who gives a heck about the number of colours!! as long as the final image looks good... and those lifebar are awsome!!! (also, nice touch with the katamari present)

user
Balamoot (Level 10 Maniac) @ 2/12/2009 14:37
Personally I support the idea of using such number of colors that is necessary. And I like this certain manga-anime style )) (though vomiting and shitting caracters can be not so cute as they seem to be)

user
ptoing (Level 7 Cuttlefish) @ 2/12/2009 08:57
It makes sense from an aesthetical view, colour harmonies and all that. If you paint a picture with real paint you don't use 200 different straight from the tube colours. You use a select few which fit what you wanna do and mix, which unifies the picture. This is very similar to using a nicely unfied palette or at least a well balanced colour scheme with good ramps. The only thing that unifies somewhat here is the general pastelly look, tho imo it's still quite garish in a way. More is not always better.

user
ben2theedge (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 2/12/2009 08:44
Complaining about color counts is usually pretty silly. Unless you're working under specific technical restrictions it doesn't make sense. "Too many colors" for what? SNES? NES? C64? Usually the "too many colors" crowd doesn't even know how many "too many" is, it's just something that's very easy to criticize if you can't find anything else to complain about.

I would say this picture doesn't really have a real light source and everything is in the same value range and on the same plane, which all combine to make it kind of flat. These could all be stylistic choices but it seems to me that this picture really wants to POP and it's not yet fulfilled it's potential for poppy-ness.

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 2/12/2009 08:22
Are they eating or throwing up? The cake makes sense in terms of an eating contest, but why the wrapped gifts?

The pixel aesthetic is retro whether or not you use "thousands" of colors. I feel like your complaint would be more valid if you art tended more toward the demoscene work, where they utilize very smooth color ramps to imply realism. This appears closer to game graphics which were born from color restrictions. Yes, you CAN use hundreds of colors if you want to, but I don't see that benefiting this piece. It takes much more skill to make 32 colors look like you're using 102 than it does the other way around. And sure, there's no technology reason for doing so, but if your goal is to make it look pretty, why not just make this in Illustrator, vector with slick auto-AA'd lines?

user
Antiboton (Level 8 Odds and Ends) @ 2/12/2009 06:27

WOW! A real discussion with P. Robertson? I'm not agree with the idea of the less color use. I preffert to think that pixel art is just done with basic tools like a mosaic done with 1x1 lego pieces. Doesn't matter the color if it fits in a GIF, in other words, (256 colors max).

I still doubt abot probertson account in PJ. Can he draw something exclusive for the site? Or enter in some weekly contests to show us his real art? Or bring some WIPs?

No one's forcing you to play by any specific rules, no need to have a hissy.

I just find it better to have more controlled, managable palettes without any superfluous colors.  A unified palette typically makes for a better piece anyway.  This goes for more than just pixelart, you don't lay down a thousand colors on a painting, you try to manage your palette or mix colors.  Same principle.  Using new colors is fine so long as they aren't redundant.

Avoiding unnecessary colors is a limitation, but it isn't a creative limitation.  If anything it helps breed creativity by forcing one to use colors in new ways or use new color combinations to achieve a desired effect.   I'd say it makes you think, and actually helps the creative process.

Like I said, this isn't a rule, I'm just throwing that out there.  Cool your jets, hon

yea i agree it is counter intuitive, look at the chat log for my old man and my invasion monkey city and you will see my learning experience. I am a professional artist also - i see my task is to get the job done, it doesn't really matter how i got to the end as long as the end is what i wanted. That is my stance, doing things in arbitrary parameters to prove any skill is a moot objective imho. but hey - i do get inspired by some artists on here like fool who do some crazy crazy things with unbelievably low colors too - its its own skill/art i suppose.

user
probertson (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/11/2009 20:10
metaldev: yeah I discovered the anal pixel nazis pretty quick. I really had no idea that this site was like that. It seems really counter intuitive to being a good artist. Why restrict yourself at all? Isn't one of the best things about being an artist to go all out and not be restricted by anything?

user
Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 2/11/2009 20:08
i feel like someone's world is shatering for a cake spiting dog.

user
probertson (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/11/2009 20:06
Jeez sorry if I don't fit in to your idea of pixel art. Who made you guys the authority anyway? Who cares about some technical bullshit like that. I know they had to limit their pallettes on early systems, but guess what? They have new systems now that can do lots of cololurs!! hard to believe I know. Have you seen the new King of Fighters game or BlazBlue? they have amazing hi-res pixel art with probably thousands of colours. Are you going to go tell them to stop what they're doing because of some stupid rules you guys made up? Ugh.

When I draw something I just try to make it look as cool as I can, i don't care how many colours it has. This place has a massive carrot stuck up it's ass.

user
metaldev (Level 4 Murderer) @ 2/11/2009 20:03
paul, what you have yet to learn about color is this:
pixel joint has, per capita, more anal pixel nazi's than any other community on the internet.

imho: each and all to their own - some people like to limit color for challenge(?), other people do pixel art simply as a style and to make a statement about early computer culture and the 80's, the actual technical color limitations aren't the point.

user
Hydronium (Level 3 Enforcer) @ 2/11/2009 19:53
Propbertson - Basically, the whole idea of pixel art is to limit the number of colors you use. It's a central part of the whole pixel scene... the first pixels were for game systems that could only support 16 or so colors. It just shows a higher skill level when someone is able to create a great image with very few colors, relying more on laying the pixels than slapping down hundreds of colors to make it look good.

user
probertson (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/11/2009 19:46
what is the big deal about using lots of colours? I've noticed lots of people crying about it. Does it even matter? I don't get it.

user
wishuponapixel (Level 6 Hitman) @ 2/11/2009 19:22
Oh wow, I just noticed the life bar with the cat&dog faces on them. That's awsome XD
Love how this looks simple but there's a lot of tiny details put in there.

user
skamocore (Level 11 Dolphin) @ 2/11/2009 19:17
actually TINC, I think this is one image that does warrant a lot of colours. Every present, cat, cake and dog has at least 3 colours and most have several more. Also, there's a big ass rainbow in the bg :P

edit: Halfie - the link should work now.
