I'll try to draw you an example if I have time some time soon :)
yeah but i'm only using 2 for the background. and trying to make the water texture as well as something underneath the surface like you said will remain impossible with 2 solors or at least to me anyway. and i read that tutorial, to me though it didn't help then and it didn't help now.
You've got 4 colors! But I guess people can only learn this the hard way, doing it over and over. This tutorial helped me a lot on everything even though it is a bit simple, but my point is that with didthering and shading you can do miracles even with 4 colors.
Either darken, add some blue or distrot the part (of the creature) which is submerged.

Sorry that's the only pics I could find on such a short notice -> Sleepy time! :)
yeah i was thinking it would be easy to add an interface as like a lives system and score right up top. just an a display like in mario. but of course mine will be different just an example of a game that has a same hud display idea as what i was thinking.
also i don't understand what you mean with the whole underwater thing. thanks for all the comments and feedback though :)
Better, but you should still try shading it differently when underwater. Only you can decide exactly how you want to do it. Maybe adding more of the darkest color or some blue... Or adding some white above the water level. Also if it's a game mock-up, you should perhaps add an interface.
no point adding anything now, challenge is over. and also i can't add another color to the palette so the whole add a blue thing won't work. and texture is a weak spot for me. i suck at it, and with two colors for the background i dought it would have worked anyway.
