Your skin tones are also too yellow, don't be afraid to hue shift.
well black outlines are not needed but what you need to do is make it so from a distance you can clearly tell the shadow areas from the light areas. Think about it as you have 2 distinct areas, the shadows, and the light. The contrast within in each area can be subtle, but the contrast between the 2 areas should be more obvious.
r1k, I looked in your gallery and saw this: http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/38705.htm . Is this what you mean by more contrast? I didn't want a black outline, but the skin tones you used are pretty good.
