I'm new to doing pixel art so I am not aware of all the tricks you people use. This is for a simple game prototyping class so it's not meant to look glamorous. /=
hard to believe only because it's a ton of unnecessary work that doesn't benefit the piece, anyone in that position would have used a gradient, it'd be silly not to. But the gradients only hurt the piece, so I'd suggest axing them altogether. The point is that so much work for so little profit seems much less believable than just using a gradient- which is bad, but doing it by hand isn't too great either, even if it is legit pixel art.
No, everything is all hand made. I used the pencil tool, pixel by pixel and line by line. Is that so hard to believe? I don't appreciate the accusations...
The columns and the shadow under the roof are not handmade right? Like using the pencil tool. Looks more like a blur or gradient or some other tool. This is not cool.
Ohh, ok. That makes sense. (= I'll do my best to avoid it in the future. Thanks for that!
we get accidental reports all the time; no worries, we ignore them.
pillowshading is shading an object by starting out dark and using increasingly lighter shades as you near the center of the object. Bad for volume/lightsources.
Pillow shading? *scratches head* I'm just now getting into doing pixel art so I don't know all the terms, lol. ^_^
The t-rex isn't really going to be all that visible in the final game, unfortunately. He does need work though; I just sort of did willy-nilly shading on it so it wasn't so glaringly flat, haha.
I think I accidentally reported your comment while I was trying to hit reply. O_o If I did, I'm sorry, I don't know if that affects you in any way.
Thanks for the comment!
Pillow shading on the T-rex's jaw! Oh no!
Great detail, I'm going there this weekend I think. Nice job
I did not accuse you of anything at all. If I felt that for sure tools (blur/dodge/blends) were used I simply would have sent it back.
I inspected your piece and found over 256 colors however. It may well be possible that you hand chose that many shades manually but why bother???
Pixelart is defined by techniques and restrictions. If pixelart can use unlimited colors then there would be no point in making it at all. Take this as an example http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/34681.htm, just 29 colors. If he submitted that very same piece with 256 colors it would not be admired much because it missed the point of the artform. Pixelart stems from a time when hardware limitations forced artists to creatively come up with solutions to these limitations and PJ today is here to celebrate it as its own artform. Just because today's compys have millions of colors does not mean we have to use them.
I can understand personal creative freedom and expression and only speak of technical issues here, k. This convo has been had many times here and many threads in the forum deal with this topic because its not always easy to comprehend when new to pixelart.
