So, go to this Forum thread a see a quick color conservation exercise for this art :)
http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5692&PN=2
He it's nice Reminds me of good ol' Mario bros
Maybe putting a little character inside would have given the picture a final touch.
Well, good. I'd rather have discussions than a few faves and one 'OMG KAWAII' comment :p
Oh really? I'm sorry for generalizing then n.n;
You can if you like, it'd be pretty interesting to see and I'd probably learn something from it. (:
Pixeljoint is a pixelart gallery. Like any gallery that showcases art, discussions stem from the art which is what art should do.
Many boys here make very cute and girly looking pieces. Pixeljoint also has its fair share of female members.
It probably isn't worth it but I could remake this art with a very limited paltte that would prove the point I made below.
Not to hijack his piece, but I guess it still is related...
I don't think it's important in every single piece of pixel art though. Restricting colors works well in most cases, and creating gradients with many shades of each color can definitely cheapen a piece. But I don't think it works against this piece. It may have been possible to cut the number of colors in half, but I doubt it would have looked any better or worse, which means that cutting colors here isn't necessary.
I didn't know that color restriction was important before I got here either actually, and I pay close attention to it now, just for the challenge. I don't even know how many colors my first iso had - I should upload it for kicks. Tons of colors...
Wow, I hope you don't mind me saying but this is so different to DA o_o I never would have received so many comments on there, especially constructive ones like this ^^;
Anyways, thanks :] I think I've got a lot to learn, heh. I didn't really know about color restriction until I signed up here, but I will try and improve my palettes.
I know it looks like Mario, it's kinda supposed to. I started sketching with that idea in my head. (:
Ps. I'm a girl XD Lol, I don't think I know many guys that would pixel /this/.
It really does matter a lot for many reasons. Pixelart is all about precision and careful pixel placement. Part of this is equiping yourself with the right colors to get there. Whenever you add a color without care and only use it sparingly becuse it only works in that area then its not as respected as picking colors that can be used in different ways to work as a unit. Color conservation has its roots in what you've said and its true that its no longer really needed but it is an essential part of the art form.
Check someone's gallery like fool's or adarias', or snake's to see the level of richness and variety achieved with extremely limited colors. Galleries like those would just fail without color restrictions.
For example, in watercolor art there is no white paint. You must plan your strokes so that you create whites by using the paper itself. I suppose you could get some white goache or acrylic and paint your whites. Would that matter? Of course, the art of watercoloring is working within those restrictions to achieve an artistic vision using that medium.
You know, I never understood color restriction, other than either bragging rights or hardware limitations. Like SNES, you could have 16 colors per sprite, taken from a selection of 256 colors that can be displayed on-screen at one time. I know it gets tricker, like only a certain number of sprites can be displayed within the same horizontal line (whic is what prodeuced the flicker), but that's not color related.
My question is why does it matter that he used 56 colors? It could have been done in less, but does it matter?
I wasn't expecting much from the preview but I must say this is very cute and well made for being new.
Too many colors, many of which are not really needed. This could well be under 24 and you'd never notice the differnece. As you learn about pixelart, hone those color conservation skills, they pay off.
Omfg i love the scene :) Even though a lot of colors i like the outcome =) looks like mario stage
Not bad, but 54 colors is a pretty big number. And the sun kinda looks like the moon. :P
Good job otherwise.
No offence, but why did you shade in the sun?
