Thanks for all the comments, I've revised the piece a little. Please check it out and tell me what you think! Anything on the shoes would be awesome!
This is cool!
Agree with previous comments about banding (thanks Hatch for the link, I hadn't found that yet on Pixellation) and anatomy (really not much to change here).
But I like your shading, and NO, this is not pillow shading, this is controlled light coming from the foreground slightly to the right, it gives a pretty good depth, and contributes much the style of this piece.
It could improve though, by shifting hue: warmer shadows, instead of just darker, would ease the somewhat greyish overall feel. But maybe this is your style too!
Also, a little problem with the eyes? (too different?)
I like the character design overall and the expression on her face is great!
The only things I'm not particularly fond of is the 2 pixel wide black outline and the pillow shading in parts, especially the arm on the left.
hey girl, you improved a lot since the last pixel, good job!
The red boxes indicate where you've got banding. There's a lot more, but that should give you an idea. It's where you have multiple lines of color hugged together like that, and it's especially prominent when it's paired with that stair step pattern. It looks bad because it accentuates (in a bad way) the pixelyness of pixel art. Click here for a post explaining it in more detail than you could ever want.
Here's how I would go about fixing it:
I only addressed the arms and torso area. Replaced most of the banding with proper antialiasing, but there were some areas where you were using it for shading. In general, you don't need to buffer your shades so much. Sometimes it's okay to have a highlight butting right up against a shadow, ya know?
Anyway, really cool lineart! Once you slay the banding demon this will be a great piece. I'd also suggest more antialiasing. Good luck!
I like the thick outlines. Your major problem right now is banding. Are you familiar with the term?
I assure you it's all my doing. =) It's a character, based upon myself, eventually going into a 2D beat-a-zombie-up game.
You're correct in that lineart is my forte and I suck at colouring when it comes to all kinds of digital and traditional drawing. Thank you for the critique, I'll work more on the shading and try how it all looks without that hard edge!
pillow shading is a big NONO! in pixel art
did u take a look at the link? ( http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af45/oooonek/girl.gif )....
i think thats much nicer!....
i dont really know onek i actually like the shading.
it gives a comcial feel to it
5/5
im not quite sure if this is rly all ur work, coz the lineart is quite perfect, anatomy is correct and stuff, so that demands good drawing skills, but contrary to that the shading is really baaad! its all pillow shaded!!!! also u used way to much colors!.... if this is rly completly ur work it should be easy to improve for u by just not shading ur pieces! or just do it right....
heres a edit to let u see what i mean:
