Sprites are pretty awesome :), but its weird to see Naruto as a pawn, since he is the main character of his show xD
Edit: Oh w8, never mind... it makes sense if all of them are kage bunshin lol
@Zeratanus: A grid is in the game but is coded based,;as for the readability of the characters on the back, you are right. I was thinking of adding a aqua outline or something of that sort to make the chars a little more readable when they are altogether.

@Acan: I'm still working on the sets and background so that I can move on onto making the exterior parts; Also, I traded Chioutzu for Krillin, and I wanted to keep Naruto as a pawn because he was pretty useless at the begining of the show ( These are all intro chars btw)

Lulz, this is a very funny and very awesome piece! Makes me want to make my own "Chessime" mockup! XD
A lot of the characters seem to have extreme forward leans, making them look off-balanced. The characters on the background also get a bit muddled and not as easily readable as they could be. I think it comes from the characters all being darker than the background. Plus, if its still working off the standard chess board (just with a fancy background) you may want to keep the grid in there somehow.
The sprites themselves all look pretty good though (other than the lean) and are all pretty instantly recognizable, so good job with that :)
I'm planing on Making various sets later on. This are the intro sets and at the begining of the show Naruto was pretty useless; hence, him being the pawn. Later on when there are maybe Shipuudden set he could be the king.
