You say you pixeled this to get a "sharper look" but there's hardly a sharp edge anywhere because of the omni-antialiasing, hence why some people have mistaken it for a vector piece. It seems kind of pointless to pixel something which ends up having none of the aesthetics of PA. For example a piece like this has flat shading but the lack of aa gives it a distinctive pixelled look which you couldn't achieve any other way. Not having a go at you or anything but workflow is important.
I appreciate the explanation (not that you owed it to anyone). One thing I want to point out is that you've got a number of wasted colors, for example there are a couple pixels on the left (our left) thigh that each use a unique palette entry, and a few AA colors used on different parts of the piece that are nearly identical. This could be chopped down to about 40 colors with no loss of quality.
I want to stress that I think a high color count is TOTALLY OK when it's necessary, and it's certainly necessary here, or on any piece with such extreme AA. My objection is to wasted and accidental colors.
But it still doesn't really matter.
Thanks everyone^^
Blueleds- I dont usually like to see pronounced ribcages either but..idk just wanted to do something a bit different from usual
Jeremy- haha I was actually going to enter the logo challenge but didnt finish in time. I'll do something non-girl soonXD And yeah I know she started out pretty asian but It dissapeared I guess. Not too concerned with that though. And Do you mean that the left eye now doesnt follow the face or before?
Dont worry about the nitpicking thing lol, I do it to other people all the time and I'm definitely fine with getting it back.
About why I used PA for this:
I much prefer the process of pixelling and the sharper look it always has and I guess its also what I'm comfortable with. Thats why I didnt vector it. I dabbled with cgs for about a month or so at one point, and psp seems to just suck for it,lol. Tools just seem quite troublesome to erase and sketch things with because the lines arent clean and and all one color and you cant be nearly as precise as you can when you do it all by hand. I dont really like automatic tools- I would just rather do it myself, lol. I feel like its worth more as stupid as that soundsXD I also prefer doing a smaller scale drawing with a lot of details to doing a huge piece to be able to fit in the same amount of detail.
And I've been getting lazy with the aa lately so I wanted to make myself sit down and do a good job of it- because this piece doesnt look half as good when its not aa'ed.
Personnely, I think that attempting something to look like vector is a very helpful project and study in terms of improving antialiasing and other techniques that involving smoothing.
Think I should probably do something like this myself....
Smoothest pixels I've ever seen, but I'd imagine that'd be more trouble than it's worth considering how quickly you could've made it as a vector and still have it look nearly the same. Either way it's great.
Nice , but my first impression was it's very vector-like, as you wrote in your description.. probably better to do it in full vector.. just my opinion. She's quite sexy, the only thing I don't really like is the very pronounced ribcage.
It's an excellent work nonetheless, really... But what's the point of using Pixel Art to make something that looks like vector?
Nice to see some different stuff from you :) (Now you just need to something non-girl ;D)
I think that she looked more asian during the first ~7 frames. Her left eye doesn't really follow the curvature of the face, looks like it's an eye that's been rotated slightly to make it slanted.
Colour count's perfectly justified IMO, you've used such nice, clear, perfectly-saturated colours that transposing AA colours from one part to another wouldn't work. However, things such as the colour AAing black lines in there here aren't really justified, I myself can't distinguish them being there or not. There's probably a few more that're only used in one place, such as the AA on the characters.
Of course, all of that is just nitpicking, image looks wonderful!
Maybe getting rid of the lines above the eye would make her look more asian: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold Looks good!
But it's pixel art nonetheless, right? Makes sense to me to be pixel art since it is pixel art.
Eets very nice! Though I do think you could've used far less colors yet preserved the smoothness. :3
I don't really like how the ribs on the left (our left) stick out, it makes it look a little flat there, maybe make them a little less thick on the outline.
(not to sure that made sense haha)
Elk- lol I'm on summer vacation so I dont have much else to do other than knock out pieces of PA. WIP up though. I was already working on it a bit before I posted the last one.
Stickman and Badassbill- Thanks! I'll see how it looks when I thin it out some and add the line between the fingers
I'd like to see a WIP
This was made in less than 5 days so I'd like to see one
Greaaaaaaaaaat work, your dithering skills are amazing.
WOw i love it.. I didn't think it was pixel art >_< but awesome job.. the pose is amazing!
I too am surprised this is pixel art. I'dve thought vector or digital painted. But since others are confirming it then it must just simply be good work. :)
The one problem I see is the one you'd already addressed yourself. She doesn't seem to look very asian to me at all. She looks. She seems more caucasian to me.
Nice tone work and great work on the rose. The way the line connects from the armpit straight to her breast looks a bit heavy to me, but everything about this piece oozes style.
I like it, the shading is simple but effective, nice AA. though I kind of argree with skamocore that she doesnt look asain, more sort of punk or something.
Very sexy. Much better than your previous works. Keep up the good work!
Very nice. The fingers look odd though. Maybe it's the lack of an outline for the middle two fingers.
oooh okay, haha. I heard the other from a friend earlier so I guess I was still thinking of itXD I'm looking for a program/website that will give me a transparent png still
skamocore. lol panda. I know, Im not usually a fan of weird makeup either><
I guess the color thing must be the same problem as last time! I remember checking and seeing that it was 59 colors and then checking after posting this and seeing it was 52. I thought I made a mistake remembering the first or something and hadnt bothered to change it on da yet but I guess gif did eat some colors.
I never knew png could be transparent- I use giffy and that only does gif tansparency so I never really thought about it before- thanks!
Personally, I don't think she looks all that Asian, but she certainly looks like a Panda.
Edit: 52 colours on PJ and 59 on dA. Same problem as last time? btw if you were unaware, png can handle transparency.
Semmu- Yes its PA. When zoomed in I think that it becomes easily apparent:D
I don't really see any problem with AA here myself. A lot of colors, but I guess that was needed to make it more smooth...
Dude, what's wrong with you? Art is a very adaptive thing. Coloring on stone walls developed into drawing on paper, which developed into drawing on the computer. Pencil and paint were made into tool and color value. Pixel Art developed into CG graphics, considering up until around 1990 it was almost impossible to do anything but Pixel Art on the computer.
Why can't Pixel Art have another adaption? SHANN0N has a very unique style and this is the epitome of it. Her thick AA creates smooth, curvy lines that are unattainable without AA. Now unless you wnat to ban AA from the gallery, which basically knocks 3/4 of the gallery into the "Revision Needed" bin, I'd say it's best to leave this piece alone. All it is is a new style.
Don't knock it because ya' haven't seen it done before.
