I wish the Mario series stuck to 2D... uh not in the Paper Mario sense.

I think you need to make the soil darker, and possibly add a simple background of clouds and hills.

Very nice btw.

The large area of white in the ground is too distracting and doesn't let my eyes focus properly on the characters.  Simple color swap to a brown/tan would help a lot.

Nice style, although some more background finishing would be great.
