Well, it is a desert, so I would expect it to be a bit empty. ^^;;
And the view is too distant for me to add footsteps. I was thinking maybe a caravan of some sort, but I'm not sure I can get any kind of good definition with only the colours up there.
I added some more hills, I think you're right.
I was trying to get a sandy texture, with dunes(the snakey lines) but as that doesn't read well, I'll give it another shot.

Maybe use the darkest color for more distant hills?
Textures are a bit random, esp at the front, and I don't really get the snake-like lines (water?), they're too similar and evenly spaced.
