Wait I thought science had something to do with physics and chemistry and stuff, not drawing. I don't try to work out rules for drawing - just do random changes or copy good stuff. Wait, that doens't sound impressive enough.
I just draw with my GUT! and employ RANDOM CHANGES!
Here's an edit.

I'm pretty sure chaos engine would use bright pink but it has been a while since I looked at the sprites. Looks kinda tinted and cool to me (on my monitor at least) - not sure that there is a theoretical justification for it. Looking again, maybe the crotch needs to be raised by a pixel in the edit as well.
edit: bow before the power of RANDOM CHANGES!!!
The way you have him poised, it really looks like he's ready to strike something. How about a peice of wood? Shattering into many peices. Animation? I know it's for a mockup, but how cool would that be?
It's go time with this guy...lol
The gray was my lame attempt at a bit of tinting, but it was done with no SCIENCE. I just sort of splatted it on how I thought it looked good. I still think it looks good; it just sort of breaks up the linear skin tone ramp.
Light source is above-ish front-ish left-ish. I didn't sweat a real strong and well-defined light source because this is a sprite that will beturning left and right and in multiple environments etc. If the light source is nebulous and poorly defined it's by design. Call this a copout.
And I'm sorry, I just disagree about the far arm. I edited it repeatedly and it never looked right in any but that position. It could have more light definitely though, I may update it.
Grey on body (on my omitor) is weird. His left arm isn't drawn right. Should see more. Where is your lightsource coming from? could have part of left hand in light. Looks good though.
Looks good, but sharprm's edits are great!
Your gut has some SCIENCE, man!
