For exactly this purpose (proper positioning) in games developers use shadows under objects - since days of Zaxxon. So I highly recommend adding simple shadows (as simple as ellipses).

I also like this piece. Lots of action!

Looks good!

The ships are abit crude though, in design and shading, they could have used strong reflections to suggest shiny surfaces; and you can't decide how close or distant to the carrier (?) they are. Probably toning down the carrier darkest colors and outlines would help.
