This is a piece I made for an update of my website.  The shambler travels the multiverse, feeding on ideas, leaving it's victims as catatonic husks.  Those who resist the beast often face a worse fate, digesting slowly, while being kept alive in it's gullet.

There may be some sloppy or inconsistent bits, seeing as most of the work was completed late, late at night, contending with a one month-old who still believes humans are nocturnal, and a two year-old with the flu.  Comments and criticism are welcome.

*slightly edited some bits, based on critiques and a review with fresh eyes...thanks!

user

hax 5/5

user
Exbaj (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/20/2009 00:17

Love it but I believe the tenticals could use AA to smooth out the edges, the tenticals take away from how great the head looks is all. Other then that I love the dithering and colouring/shading of the head.

user
Tyvon (Level 2 Corporal) @ 10/19/2009 15:18

Oh my god holy shit.

user
slym (Level 8 Rear Admiral) @ 10/17/2009 06:48

Its nice but you really need to choose better colors. The colors are very boring. I would do colors that change the hue rather than really desaturated colors like these. Without looking so much at the colors, the piece looks really well done. The shape is great and depth is great.

user
Mush (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/17/2009 04:12

Wow, this is amazing. I would never have the patience to create something that big...

user
Dino502Run (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 10/16/2009 05:57

Radicall!!!

user
Mathias (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 10/15/2009 20:28

Impressive piece, must've taken a while. I like the slimy glossy surfaces you acheived. The orange eye is a fun focal point. I somewhat regret the simple ramp used for the entire thing but it does unify, the muscly texture isn't particularly becoming, with something this big it's too repetitious. Tentacles' random chunky widths make them look like huge slugs, not writhing deadly extentions of the octa's body. More typical tentacles would've benefitted, yet this guy is more of an alien type so considering that the different style of tentacles make sense.

user
Levi (Level 1 Thug) @ 10/15/2009 16:37

Elk, I completely disagree.  This piece would suffer from going smaller.  I'm sure you could drop it to 50% and still make a great pixel, but a big part of why this piece is so good is the intricacies.  Reduce the size, and in this case, you lose the ability to display those intricacies.  Plus, you seem to be writing off the dithering, when it's a really good dithering job...

user
Elk (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 10/15/2009 11:49

yea

all the details can be shown much better when its smaller

its just alot of colors and dither

user
Photocopier (Level 11 Godfather) @ 10/15/2009 08:03

The whole thing?

user
blueleds (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/15/2009 06:53

WOW, looks like it was a lot of work..  I like the concept/description.. Good job.

Crits: I would've liked to see some variations in the skin colors, like something irridescent or maybe just different tints for the shadows and hilights.  And where are the suction cups?

user
Arthurio (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/15/2009 04:01

just amazing :O

user
Elk (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 10/14/2009 22:45

I think it's too big

user
OSM (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 10/14/2009 21:23

 INSANE.

user
Doppleganger (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 10/14/2009 19:57

I went ahead and edited his front-left tentacle that I was talking about. Really only the part where it connects to the head and the webbing, though. While I think there are some perspective and shading issues, I wasn't too keen on taking them on at the moment. Another thing I noticed is that the back ridges of its frill don't really follow the contour of the head. I think they would be far less visible from this point of view.

Overall, I think that there is just too much 2-dimensionality, and that the shading on the tentacles is confused in places. In fact, the tentacles remind me a lot of Frankie's work. Which, while often impressive, suffers from the same problesm oft-times.

And here's the edit

user
Doppleganger (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 10/14/2009 16:30

Amazing, my favorite animal!

I really dig the head, but I think that the tentacle sizes/shapes are miscontstrued. Same with the their texture. Right now, it looks like a burlap sac version of an octopus. Which, maybe that's the point, since it is an other-worldly creature.

Anyway, I really like it, and the one other thing I might consider if I were you, is how his front two tentacles relate to each other.  His front-right tentacle seems to be about 2x as long as his front-left. Also, it's like his body is disproportionately smaller than the right-side where his front-left tentacle meets.

user
Nightmare Maker (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 10/14/2009 15:01

NO WAY, 16 colors! XD

Awesome, love the texturing.

The eyelid looks like it's sagging to our right just a wee bit, that's the ONLY thing i can see wrong, this is really amazing.

user

user
xXHalfieXx (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 10/13/2009 13:39

This is really sweet. The tenticles resemble tree trunks to me.

user
nvision (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 10/13/2009 13:29

@ Souly:  Yup, I'm still in Okotoks.  I've been busy working on non-pixel art game, called Inferus...  For the tentacles, I was trying to go for more of a gnarled root feeling, with random twisty sinew, rather than traditional octopus arms.  I may add hook teeth to them at some point in time.

@jamesmorrow07:  I'm not sure about the exact time, but probably something like 12-13 hours, in total.  I roughed it out with a 5x5 pencil tool, then added minor details with a 2x2, and finally polished/dithered with a standard 1x1.

user
Clickety (Level 1 Depressed) @ 10/13/2009 13:17

Looks amazing! Well done o.o

user
jamesmorrow07 (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 10/13/2009 11:26

How long did it take you to do this? This is awesome!

user
Game & Watch (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/13/2009 10:11

This is completely insane!

user
Souly (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 10/13/2009 09:57

Hey nvision, still in Okotoks?
Pretty sweet stuff here man, nice looking octopus though the tentacles are a bit odd.

user
eldiabolito (Level 2 Quiet One) @ 10/13/2009 09:38
