Yeah, it really takes up a lot of the screen now that I look at it!

YW, and I'm really glad you'll be making more (I just love pixel trees, but haven't had the courage to try one yet!).

That's very nice of you to say.  Take care!

I have no problem with the cartoon-like style (couldn't live without it in a Zelda game).

But I'd like to raise a couple considerations (and only because it seems that praise without critique is not very useful or thoughtful or respectful to the artist) but feel free to disregard them if I've misunderstood your style or intent.

  • I'd like to see a shaded outline (this one is pure opinion and of course wouldn't be as useful if the tree was supposed to stand out on a small screen - say a GBA mock-up).  Never be afraid of outlines, though, they tell me here: glorify them (in colour), flaunt them (thick dark lines), but never hide them.
  • make the hues more interesting.  Hue shifting seems weird to me still, but I hear it from so many people here, and I can't deny that it makes pixel pieces really pop.  Suddenly, for me, all greens without yellows as their neighbours look really bland!  And both the trunk and foliage can use more purple in the shadows, as weird as that may sound!
  • the front of the four bubbles defining the tree is much smaller than the other three - was this purposeful?
  • the leaf texture is far too tiny.  Even though making bigger leaves seems to play havoc with realistic senses of scale (what would they be, leaves two feet wide?) it helps the piece read.  It looks grainy at the moment and not 'leafy'.  (besides, the leaves are already too big for the scale, so you might as well play this up in a way that 'lies to tell the truth' as you might say!)
  • to summarize these points in a quick illustration, here's a pixel tree, and here's another one closer in shape to yours.

Sorry if this seems like a torrent of ideas, but they're all in a friendly spirit, I promise, and in the hopes of seeing more pieces in the future!
