@ Manu: thanks :) the first wip on the forum has a problem though, the midtone of the skin isn't in the palette for the challenge, i'd changed it to remind myself about finding a midtone for that, so the skin in the first wip isn't "fit" - the alternative version's actually growing onto me with that greenish midtone for the skin and the green aura around the moon, might actually update the entry...
Beautiful!
Agree with comments about dithering. The alternative version doesn't really fix the problem (with the face), but I think your 1st forum wip was better in this respect (specifically, the shapes of highlight and shade patches on the face). You might have switched all values to one or two darker values on the palette. Increasing darkness and contrast of the face would also have been more in touch with the atmosphere, I think.
Then, the monster might have blended much more into the tree, as much as to become barely visible.
Still, it's really nice, esp since that palette was not the easiest to use. ;)
@ Dawnbringer:
I have a version where instead of dithering the skin, I've used an extra midtone from the palette, but tbh I didn't like it as much, I can show you that one if you want to offer some feedback on possible improvements?
The area around the moon is dithered because... I like it, sorry lol. I had alternative versions like the one I linked to above, but those wouldn't meet your taste either, I'm afraid
@ Sharpm: I did quite a bit of sketching for the legs and one only looks longer because the foot is stretched out and due to perspective
@ Adarias: lol
@ everyone else: thanks
Great! Nice to see someone play with the darker register of the palette :)
I like your style but you (still) have a problem with over-dithering and under-AA.
There is no reason dithering with that brighter grey around the moon when there is a darker grey in the palette of the intended shade. Note that in a balanced low-saturation palette like this, most colors can double as shades of brightness...helping AA & smoothing.
....and why is there a girl in a tree in the middle of the night? :D
For some reason this reminds me a lot of Iron Maiden's Fear of the Dark's cover o.o
nice expression. maybe the leg sizes dont match each other though.
love your work :P
