When u draw a face, use a ref.

Here's a checklist let me know if i screwed any up

1. can u tell she has skin

2. can u tell what race she is (anglo saxon)

3. can u tell roughly she is teenager not adult

4. does she look sad

5. are the features in the right place and right size

6. is the whole thing appealing to look at (not sure i got this one ...)

also, can u recognise the actress (i wasn't really worried about getting this right)

when people dont use a ref the result is bizarre imo. There is too much info in the face to remember imo.

ref used: http://macleans.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/newmoon-slide.jpg

method used: drawn at 2x in graphics gale, shrunk down and cleaned significantly.

EDIT: i cant edit it to make it look like a teenager. I think she most looks like a teenager because of her upturned nose and also the large forehead which means rotating the head is necessary. Basically I have to start again, and I'd rather learn some basics before doing that like edge control and getting the skin to look reflective. So here is a total copout disguising the problems. This is a hot babe to a vampire :P Check out her JUGularS !

I actually have Fun With a Pencil.  Need to spend more time with it.  Anyway, those are some great links.  Just the kind of stuff I was looking for.  Thanks for sharing.

thx dpixel. i recently downloaded andrew loomis books (see my profile for link if anyones interested) and should be able to fix those things after i learn the skull and muscles. About the ear been looking in the mirror with same angle and different to how I expected.

My guess for age would be 28.  And she looks like she's staring at a computer or something.

As far as nit picky (which I'm not), but you seem like the type so...here goes: At the current angle of the nose and mouth there seems to be too much of her left cheek and eye showing.  I hold up my finger to cover some of the cheek bone and she becomes more attractive.  And a big maybe...the ear is a touch too low.

Very pleasant to look at and over all very attractive.  Some of your best work imo.  Great job.

"Actually to be precise I changed the title at least and hour and twenty minutes before you uploaded urs because Evilgram faved the new title at @ 1/3/2010 4:34:12 AM."

I did not doubt you changed it before - just stated (as a funny remark btw.) that you ruined my joke. I think it does not matter when it was changed, but that it was changed concerning that. My joke is ruined anyway

Just kidding.

"I renamed it before I saw your piece srry to ruin the joke." I guess i can live with that , its got a more fitting name now anyway.

As to the hair: I still somehow prefer the hair in this one, but its nice in the other one, too.

user
sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) @ 1/4/2010 04:54

I renamed it before I saw your piece srry to ruin the joke.

I spend very little time on the hair see the storm piece for better.

Zweckform (Level 1 Intern) @ 1/4/2010 03:43

Looks nice and the hair really turned out good. Btw. you ruined my joke (i guess you know what i mean) by renaming this piece.

The hair is just beautiful <3

Just to clarify question 1. Once i saw in this chinese bookstore how to draw faces first volume was copying drawings of statues. Second book was drawing real faces.( I kinda wish I had've bought the book I assume the chinese aren't into bs). So question 1 is have i conveyed that it is skin or does it look like wood or rock or porceline etc.

Interesting note when they blocked out the face they used 'quads' rather than using tris. Maybe there is a good reason for that (in 3ds max i think 'gouroud shaded' would look better that way, could tris lead to unsmooth faces?).

okay tons of feedback thx guys. You can stop now until I do another edit.

Onek - thx for the edit. She does look younger there well done. You make an interesting point about 6.

PBDC - i agree its funky there i think i need a ref with the same angle.

stickman - 5. John K did a post on asymmetry and perfectly symmetrical faces looks weird for photos. For painting to they look like medieval angels? Anyway if its too asymmetrical it looks deformed and thats what I'm trying to avoid.

Thereisnocure - "wish more folks would realize the importance of refs (especially for the human face!)" cheers thats what i like to hear.

Pragz - thx for info. here is a british version :P i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/sharprm/birtish.png

Ill try to work on the eye and other things.

edit: its not doable editing this thing. need to start again maybe some time later. for now instead I added some veins and crap see the description. Here is the old one for context: http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/sharprm/shrunk28.png

 1- Yeah, I guess.

2- Guess so.

3- Nope.

4- A mix of sad and angry.

5- Nose and forehead slightly bigger than they should, other than that, yeah.

6- No idea, guess so.

And nope, I dont recognized it.

2. definitely white, wouldn't say she looks particularly anglo-saxon (probably due to those squintier eyes, I'd place her further east in europe)

3. roughly

4. looks complacent, I wouldn't say she looks sad though.

6. didn't recognize the actress until I was told it was an actress, at which point I assumed it was most likely the twilight chick.

again, nice-lookin' piece, i feel the eye on our right looks a tiny bit lower, maybe add darker pixels above the middle of that straight line. doesn't make a huge difference, really, just nitpicking. also, seconding stickman's comment about the pupil.

user
Pragz (Level 1 Depressed) @ 1/2/2010 14:30

Basically what Dawn said. XD

Naww, but the general difference between Caucasian and Anglo-Saxan is skin tone. Caucasians are generally what you find in North America and Anglo-Saxan is more British-European. The sun is brighter on their side than it is over here. A good rule of thumb is to base Caucasians on a brown-red palette and Anglo-Saxans on an olive-pink palette.

But of course there are exceptions. Plus, if you were aiming for British, she needs giant buck teeth that have yellowed from years of no brushing! c:

(*is kidding* XD)

Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 1/2/2010 12:07

Nice pic.

1: Her skin is very polished and uniformed without any blemish textures or freckle bits(is that what you meant?). There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

2: I thought she may have been Italian or Greek and not Anglo Saxon.

3: She looks like a mature adult in her late 20's early thirties.

4: She look more like she is in thought rather than sad.

5: I find this very tricky to answer as faces that are drawn to look evenly placed  or with the perfect body sometimes doesn't work for me(e.g. some people have really high foreheads, which may look odd when drawn, but is perfectly acceptable regardless etc.) But the placement of feature's in this pic look fine.                             Sorry i haven't been much help on this question.

6: Looks appealing to me.

The only thing I would comment is the pupil of the eye on the right. It looks a little unreadable with the 2 white pixel dots, as to where she is looking...

user
ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 2 King Checker) @ 1/2/2010 11:54

I don't think she looks like a teenager. Doesn't necessarily look sad. I think the right side of the face with the diagonal line needs work. She doesn't have much of a jaw.

user
onek (Level 6 Hitman) @ 1/2/2010 06:31

1. uhm.. yeah?...dont see any muscles, blood etc....so i guess yeah

2. yeah caucasian....and definitely human...

3. more like adult

4. sad/ neutral

5. her left eye (our right) seems strange , agree about the mouth...

6. not rly... it feels more like a passport photo or something, not very artistic, theres no composition or anything at all  which makes it kinda boring to look at, also the background isnt rly pleasing...

heres a quick edit.   changed the eye abit also tried to make her look younger by squeezing the lower parts of her face and lifting the nose a bit

sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) @ 1/2/2010 04:27

thx for the info.

here it was after rescaling. the reason i did it larger and rescaled was an attempt to have the features in the right place. i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/sharprm/shrunk1.png

here is the old one to give context to pragzs comments. i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/sharprm/shrunk20.png

I tried putting some green around the highlight maybe that helps with skin.im hoping the new one looks sadder though i dont think ill be able to get the age right i need to do more drawings of teenagers to figure out which parts need to be made smaller etc. ill have another go tomorrow. but even if its still screwed up, its still backs up my point, because i think without using a ref (just drawing in a vacuum) age never even enters the equation.

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Pixel artist) @ 1/2/2010 03:45

C'mon Sharpy, just use GrafX2 and stop fiddlin' around with weird conversions

Caucasian can be simplified to "white" whilst Anglo-Saxons are usally english speaking Brits or an England-invading germanic tribe... and I don't see her wielding an axe!

user
sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) @ 1/2/2010 03:13

whats the difference between caucasian and anglo saxon.

thx for the pointers ill try to address them.

user
Pragz (Level 1 Depressed) @ 1/2/2010 03:04

1. No, I thought she was a burn victim. (Kidding. XD)

2. Maybe if she had a little more pink/green in the tone. I got Caucasian first.

3. Not really. She looks mid-20s to me.

4. Not really. She kinda' just looks a little bored. ):

5. In my eye, yes. The only thing I see is her mouth doesn't share the angle of the face.
