Thanks for the suggestion, I tried a different approach with tiles and it looks better.
Cool to see the art in context. Love the parallaxing water. I can see why you don't want to vary color too much. Have you tried building a canopy that tiles?
Thanks for the comments!
Kat1e: Changed it a bit.
shibumi: Added a highlight and changed some trees towards yellow. I'd like to avoid too huge contrast differences but keep the canopy thick enough to hide the horizon. Well, I'm getting second thoughts on the whole thing - these look "ok" on their own, but perhaps not quite as I intended them. WIP thread for the whole background if you're interested:
These trees all look and feel very similar. I know you varied their designs but I thought they were the same tree resized at first. I would vary their structure and colors a bit more. Try making a few tree tops darker than the others. You might also change the trunk colors on some and I think adding a highlight color to the trunk will give you much more form. Those little branches shooting off the trunks, try popping little tufts of leaves on the ends of some. And how about at least 1 large pine tree? These changes and additions would create a more natural looking forest. Nice trees otherwise.
Bonus points for the spruce pun! :D
