@ KittenMaster: Thanks Kitten for the love, i know it's lacking in some ways and the idea of lightening lines is an excellent one - i did shade it and make the lines light but I didn't like it as much as the first form so I decided on just leaving it as is - thanks for the words of wisdom <3<3 I will keep trying and apply your theory

Yes, but I don't think this piece actually *needs* it, as in it looks great even without it. I would suggest lightening the lines before thinking of applying AA because since this piece has no intention of creating 3D volume, the lines just need enough contrast to separate the form. Just lightening the lines will help make the image look less jagged, and would aid in its charm, IMO.
Every Pixel Art piece ever made can use AA. There is absolutely no reason to not do any AA.
I don't think this piece actually needs anti-aliasing, per se. The lines are already very smooth and well made. The line color itself just needs to be a bit lighter, but still different enough from the main colors to define the piece, in order to lessen the harshness.

Sorry, AA = anti-aliasing. Thoughtless and lazy of me to overuse acronyms. Meaning, adding pixels of intermediate values to soften jaggy lines, pretend to make nice round curves from square pixels, and such.
Tuto here (I don't agree with everything in it, for instance the color part, but it's ok to get the idea and start practicing).
There are countless others on the web, forum posts, etc. Take the time to search everywhere, and at Pixellation too (the other pixel art site I linked to about banding).

I....I think you're right about outlines for the bg - I guess I didn't think of not making it black because it was from the original mario 3 bg? but for the sake of other stuff standing out, might be a really good idea. Agree with MG. Also, the few changes in outline color are disturbing. And I'd suggest to skip outlines for background.
