i dont see how you make the character to look flat, i dont see it. Usually (always) if people notice me with something wrong, i see it my self too. But this time i dont see any flatness in it, and the anatomy should be what it is, i would never change it. DBZ characters dont have the correct anatomy, neither does my character.
Character seems flat and anatomy is bad. On pixel-level this is good. Great use of purple!
Yes, im not defending anything. I like the whole picture as it is my self, and i think it looks good for real. It can be anime, manga, chibi, or whatever u want to say it is, i dont know the right term for it. Someone said its like the DBZ characters.
I'm sorry if I sounded condescending. If you look at my gallery you'll see that I do the chibi style myself. Chibi as a style isn't purely about the head size, but the way specific parts of the character are resized in relation to each other. The character's proportions would be reduced akin to a child's, then the forms are slightly altered to suggest the character's actual age; an older person might have more wrinkles, a kid would have a more playful stance, etc.
If you hide the head, you'll see that the character has the proportions of a normal adult. The legs are around four heads high, shoulders to waist is around two. Had the body been slightly lengthened or legs shortened it would read more chibi to people.
Again, I apologize. Your work has definitely improved a lot, and I can see that you're ready to handle more advanced stuff. I just felt completely offended when you posted that wiki link, and leaving it to defend your work. It felt like a scapegoat to it's like saying "I added that lensflare because everybody does it". It would have been better if you mentioned that you were actually trying to do that specific style, or maybe you wanted to give your own twist to it.
thank you, this is what i really wanted to hear.. thanks again.
I was just wondering the same thing. Anatomy is important in different ways to different people. In this case, PanicBomber was going for a different style, how he sees the chibi style. I am suprised that the comments here aren't more on how this piece is much better than PanicBomber's other pieces. : /. Anyway, this is a great improvement, and if someone says anything to make you feel like a bad artist, the commenter probably didn't mean to insult you. Some people just forget to add the extra line of re-asurrance. Honestly there isn't that much wrong with this piece, just some AA problems at some places, like the top of the shirt (neck area of shirt). Maybe the belt can be worked on a little, but there isn't much you can do with a belt anyway :P.
Great job :)
but.... the head is made to be bigger than it should be on _purpose_.... arf. And why are people always only commenting what is wrong with the work? So its pure crap then? nothing is done well? I mean every comment on a piece ive worked so hard on, is like "the head is too big", "i dont like it".
I can take critic, and i want it. But i dont want to have the feeling that i suck ass... Thats not really nice.
@ slym:
Thanks ^^
I just love it when artists post something that is much higher quality than their other recent work :D. Great job!
Err... the legs may be close to chibi, but the proportions of the torso, arms and neck are for a normal-sized character, ergo the head looking too big.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime#Character_design
and also chibi have too big heads, its manga/anime.
If you're familiar with Paper Mario -sprites, that is what I mean as seeming flat. Right hand seems to be just the sleeve sticked onto his chest. This is because the sleeve is as dark as the chest. Anatomy is not relatively unapprovable, but the muscles are way too distorted.
Again, the palette is great though! Concentrate on anatomy. I suggest having real people as reference, then later move onto distorting bodyparts from a realistic scale. This way you can make it work.
