Okay, well I made up a new background to try and change it up, which I'll post. I don't know what it is with my brightness settings, but I can't really figure out how to change it... I'll put up my new background in a moment in a new screenshot if you'd like to see it.
Alright, I'll put it in the information. I'm putting a lot of this stuff on here in the hopes of feedback for improvement, and those parts aren't a part of it, they're just kinda there. It's really the pixel art that I want people to see and that I want them to tell me what should be improved and such.
It's ok but it's happened before in that someone has done some graphics a bit too inspired by mine and because they release their game first I look like the one who copied them and it got tiresome when asked to prove mine was first and eventually I got real demotivated about the game and just cancelled it.
Don't know if you have to remove the NPA as long as you state clearly that's what it is in the info bit. I'm a bit of a pixel purist and don't use those things so I'm a bit unclear about the rules on that.
@Wolverine: Ah, you're right. Okay, so should I take it off, seen as it isn't pixel art? Kind of defeats the purpose of the site, although most of it is pixel art.
About your backdrop in comparison to this one, it is very similar, and I'm going to attempt to change it. One problem with a lot of the things I do is that I'm not very imaginative, and thus when I see something I like, I try to make it my own, but often do not change it enough. Sorry about that, I'll try to come up with something on my own.
It's nice but there's non-pixel art going on here at the entrance on the left and the lava (?) which appear to be using some alpha transparency effect raising the color usage up beyond 300 colors. The background I thought was totally black until I upped the brightness (your monitor settings might be set too high) and saw it looks extremely similar to the backdrop in my game hero: cf which kinda depresses me to be honest.
I changed up to a screenshot of a different room. This update has a little creature that bounces around and lava with a glow effect. The biggest change, however, is the addition of slopes. The player can move up and down them, and I had to put in a change to the tileset to make them look nice and fit in. Reactions?
@yrizoud: by "walkable void" tile, do you mean the background tile or the solid black part outside the are you can walk?
@Khoryl: I actually have lava geysers in a different game of mine that's near completion: http://gmb-time.blogspot.com/2010/03/quietus-alpha-ix-level-select-and.html
@Badassbill: thanks! I spent two hours or so doing them.
@antymattar: sure, I'd be happy to have ideas! So far I'm thinking that I'll go with a cave-style adventure game where you try and escape the caves. It won't be a huge enemy game, but more of a traversing terrain game (but it will have enemies, of course!)
Thanks everyone!
wow! Can i help you make this game! I have ideas like this:
Wall walkers jumsalots etc
10/10 very good job!
I only advise to up the contrast in the "walkable void" tile. It looks pure black, even though you used a two-tone pattern.
The "mushroom" look like a lava geyser with that orange tone (would be funny if it burned the character @$$ to make him jump high though xD)
Alright, I desaturated the character a bit to try and bring him out of the background, as Randommonkies said, and I think it's worked pretty well. I'm about to update the image with these small change in a minute.
I'm going to have to 3rd the opinion on changing the colour of the mushroom, also I think the guy is a little too dark- making him a bit brighter would bring him out of the BG a little.
I lightened up the mushroom to try and make it a bit more visible. I'm hoping it will work out without having to alter the color scheme.
@r1k: I'm glad you liked it! I posted up the tileset a couple of days ago, and I really like it. It was my first try using this kind of style, and I'm really happy with how it came out.
@Khoryl: I fixed that little pixel in the tileset; thanks for pointing it out!
I really like the tile set. I made the same type of tile set for a game I started a few days ago too, but I like yours better now Im going to redo mine.
I was also about to point out the mushrooom should be different colors to show it is interactable and not background.
If it's going to be a game, the "Mushroom" should stand out more (color wise) and the purple alien is too saturated I think. Gotta say I love the rock tile a lot, especialy the palette though there's a little pixel that annoy me a lot for some reason but I can't find the words in english to explain it... >.<

Quick edit to explain it :P
disappointed badly. i seen the tileset you posted liked it alot.
now i see this there are eleements that aren't even pixelart, and this is a pixelart community so this should be removed! also you zoomed in the peice, never do that. if we want to zoom in that should be our choice. that is why the zoom buttons are there.
taking this post to an end, i'd just like to say that you need to put more work into this, in my opinion you destroyed the tileset. could be made to be a lot better, but thats just my opinion. look at carnivac's work or wolverine as you call him. i've followed his work for a long time. you could learn alot by looking at his work.
