i know it says tha i shouldn't upload anything half finished but i just couldn't think of what else to include in the map. it's just supposed to be an amalgamation of randomness... i guess it wasn't random enough.

hey thanks man, actually, i'm reaaaaally trying to get a handle on making better tiles. i'm playing zenonia 2 right now on the iphone and holy craaaap it's so lush! i wanna do something like that. i just dunno how to make all these tiles click together well. i'm not much of an environment guy. i shall keep trying though. :D

I work exclusivly in Photoshop and have never really had a problem with making my own palette- there might be an easier way to do it but basically as I work I just put the colours I use on a separate layer- usually organized from light to dark.

To check that I've used JUST those colours I occasionally use the Magic Wand tool* with Sample All Layers* selected, Contiguous unchecked and Tolerance at 1* that way if you select all the colours on your palette they should be selected on your image as well. Anythign that isn't selected obviosuly doesn't confrom to your palette.

Basically thats what I do, just remember to update it as you go and you'll have no problem.

oh sweet dude! thanks so much! i did this all in photoshop. any tips on creating palettes on it? i heard it's a pain in the butt to manage your own palettes in the program. i'm seriosuly stoked that i'm getting great advice from nice people. once again, my first day here and bam! already sweet help! thanks so much! i shall definitely work on it and work on my color limitations. :)

randommonkie mentioned some good points.... also u should definetly  work on ur colors.... right now u have more than 256 colors, the grass tiles alone use like 8 or so....maybe something went wrong while saving, idk... anyway u have too much....  dont use different colors for every object, instead try developing a general palette that serves all ur needs (like 8 -  max 32 colors, indeed ull seldom find pixelart using more than 32 colors)... also u can use preset palettes like those of old machines like the c64/ cga-graphics/ custom palettes etcetc it can be real fun being restricted.... for most pixelartist its like a  code of honour to make something  using  as few colors as possible, may it be nostalgia or a specific aesthetic that comes with it...  having too much colorsalso  makes ur graphics busy and harder to read.... blablabla...

heres a down to 14 colors reduction using arne's palette (..it also has much more contrast which is rly important aswell)

thaaaat's it!!! work in progress! ughh... i'm so out of it today! yes! thanks! yeah, actually i was trying something along the lines of the pokemon gba style. i wanna know how tiling works. grass and all these textures are something that i've actually never touched upon. i've mostly been doing simple sprite animations. i definitely would like to get better. thanks again man! i'm so glad i joined finally. all i did was oggle at everyone's work.

no problem! WIP = work in progress. There is a section in the forums dedicated for WIPs and its a good place to get critiques and post updates to your work unitl it is ready for the gallery.

not sure if you've been looking at references, but some good ones, based onthe style of your piece would be The Legend of Zelda; A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, as well as the pokemon games. They all have very simple yet visually pleasing grass that covers a wide area very well; as well as having similar elements to your piece.

hey thanks! dude, i'm new to all this. i actually just created my profile today. i wanna know how to make better tiles or what not. i totally get what you're saying and i'm so glad you critiqued it. what is WIP by the way? seriously man, thanks for telling me what i need to fix! this is super helpful!

You need to break up the repetetivness of the grass, its really flatening the image. Also the perspective of the brown stairs and wall need to be worked on. Some of the pieces break from the style of the other sprites, especially in the msuroom section, and the bricks of the village are waay to bright. Either tone them down, or integrate them better into the surrounding grass rather than just a rough border.

Everything North of the village looks decent, just break up the monotony of the grass, add a few variations to the tress and other objects (not just colour changes) and maybe bump the contrast a little -especially in the cliff area.

considering the amount of stuff I just said, it may be beneficial for this piece to be put in the WIP forum- (if it isn't already)
