I think I actually used to do that with my hands when I was a kid--I had some very dynamic, loose-jointed way of flopping them around while walking. It wasn't until years later that it struck me how doofy it must have looked.

Or he could be walking as he is, and then sort of extrude a tentacle from somewhere, absent-mindedly scratch his butt with it, and continue as before... :)
