yeah, you only sorta stand on poochy...but...whatever :p I was just trying to be as useful as I could
About stretch/Squash, I dont mean like a post processing as in Ragnarok online pokemon and such...I mean within your animations themselves, as a way of conveying movement. Squash/stretch is actually one of Disney's so called principles of animation.......you can see the basic idea here but it's probably more expanded in "the animator's survival kit" but you better put apart some time for that because I dont know exactly where and the book deserves a good read.
what bothers me about the pose is he's ducking very close to the ground like he's squashing...also the way you drew his backside so long and straight looks like a boat, not natural...and then when you reach the chest it abruptly turns upwards, that makes it all look very unnatural. I think you should make the whole back have a more gradual, lesser curve...dont worry about showing his chest so much, I think he usually doesnt stand like that when he's carrying someone.
Actually, I made him lean forward so much to conform to the Mario I have in my Gallery (in my 'Infinite Power-ups' Submission) this is sort of from a while ago, which really isn't an excuse, since I haven't opened the file since early 2010...This is more or less a 'Rough Draft' of the 'Riding' Pose, since I have yet to make a better one, but like you said, I should probably make the Mario & Luigi Riding Pose first, rather than after. Since I sprite in pieces, the Arms aren't really a problem, they are meant to overlap Mario's legs, but I see what you're saying
I was thinking of doing something like that, sort of like how GameFreak animates their Pokemon sprites, but some people I know absolutely hate that about the Pokemon games...But again, it doesn't necessarily have to be like that (I could just as easily widen Yoshi a few Pixels, then shorten him the same to get a Stretch effect without actually stretching him)
Going back to the idea of Yoshi Riding Yoshi, I was kind of thinking of yoshi only being able to use his tongue after he Grabs an egg, or something, but then that doesn't really answer how you can get hit, and reclaim it by jumping on it...Yoshi could Ride Birdo, but I'd prefer him/her as a mini-boss...I never actually thought of Poochy, but that would make the most sense, seeing as how Poochy is a 'Yoshi' character (Only you don't really ride him...)
Very nice depiction of yoshi.
About the pose I really dont see why he should be badly posed because he's being ridden, YI certainly doesnt make Yoshi look bad without Baby Mario...and yoshi is looking a little too squashed to me here. Furthermore, if you have not made the mario poses you simply dont know how it will look with him on, you should make atleast a paceholder image of on him to have an idea of where his arms will go, where his legs will go...and wether it'll even have good composition at all. Just thinking about it I can see that when he shoots his tounge out you'd have to make yoshi's arm a separate sprite, since the way you moved it would overlap Mario's leg if he were riding Yoshi
for the animation...I really think that you should take advantage of the unrealistic and simplistic style of these characters, and do some squash/Stretch as he animates...maybe watch some classic cartoons for inspiration.
Also...if you dont want Yoshi riding yoshi but still want something similar....you could have maybe something like Boshi or Birdo hell.....you could even make up a new character that has the same functions as yoshi...so yoshi can ride it without it looking like rule 34. Off the top of my head I can think of some kind of 4 legged piranha plant :p. Even if that's not what you want you could just have something different come out when Yoshi hits a yoshi block, like a 1up or Poochy remember Yoshi has also ridden other things in YI
You know, when I eventually get back to this, I should really look at how Yoshi's posed in Super Mario Galaxy 2 & New Super Mario Bros. Wii, That will probably help more than using Super Mario World's Yoshi as a Reference...If only because they use the 'Modern' Yoshi
