okay, after already submitting the sister ship recently, here it is, finally finished: the other spare-pic from this year's breakpoint demoparty. got 3rd place in the 'handmade gfx competition', outpaced by frost's piece.. controversially =)

initially wanted to release another donkey piece there, but ran out of time and decided to fastly pixel the submarine summer version that i had on my list since a friend showed me 'uncharted' on his playstation last year.

final version was done w/ grafx2.2 - thanks to jamon and yrizoud i finally found a way to get comfortable with it. further credits to ilkke for another nice, yet quite useless submarine link and the king of pop =)

has a slightly broken perspective to it, i know, but the party version was quite fastmade and i didn't want to change too much in the final version; blank area on the right is intended, just in case.

tools: grafx2 v0.965 (dos) + grafx2 v2.2.1430

misc: party-vs-final

inspiration: the submarine from uncharted

p.s. this text contains 2 hints for ppl who're familar with demoscene pixel traditions =)

Awesome nice shading and i love the moose in the background and has the question mark on top of it.

YOYOGiGi (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/21/2010 03:20

an lighter gamma for a cool picture, technics is cool, great !

Mathias (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 5/12/2010 09:37

Undeniably tomic. Wonderful image. Always love your pixeling style - namely how you handle detailing surfaces in such a way that engenders tons of visual interest. Also, I find your natural way of doing things honors traditional pixel aesthetics in a charming way. Not too many colors and over AA'ing, but just enough palette gamut to lend you enough room to make a great piece.

Not sure about the obvious discinction between fore and background - dark line outlining waterfall rocks, etc. The closest foreground rocks have no dark oultine.

Full marks.

jamon (Level 10 Operative) @ 5/12/2010 00:06

He he! i love how you played with all this old bridge stuff... This one is realy nice - but my favorite is donkey on the cliff =)  Anyway faved!

i like hidden parts to...  ;)

DGH94 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/11/2010 17:43

Anyone else see a periscope in the small lake from the other waterfall right to the left of the tip of the submarine?

RPG_Boy (Level 5 Captain) @ 5/10/2010 19:41

 oooo fish

tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 5/10/2010 14:44

hehe, one did his homework ;D ..and for the record: yepp, it is the case!

thanks for the nice comments all, @saludas: well i know at least 5 who do better =) and @pragz+st0ven, you're right, cannot turn off 'overdetailing' things =) but i'll try some alternate background styles at this one.. for testing purposes at least.

iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 5/10/2010 13:03

Adorable and FAV!

I like to think that you drew some inspiration for the bg from 'the old bridge', even tho it might not be the case.

Love the rocks in the front, and the clouds in the back.

Glad you finally took GraFX2.2 for a spin. Even the fish love it, or so I'm told! ;D

SpaceSalmon (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/10/2010 12:20

I love how alive your art is and I don't think anyone here on PixelJoint do it as good as you.

Varock Shade (Level 7 Underboss) @ 5/10/2010 08:28

You seem to have something mit U-Boten I have to say though that it's a pretty awesome piece! Not only the quality of the piece, but I also really like compositions with high contrasts between nature and industrial men-made buildings+vehicles

manxana (Level 2 Quiet One) @ 5/10/2010 07:21

haha, when i saw the title it gave me a laugh. and I think this image in a full black background it would come out more.

Thanks for posting a wip.

DoberMann (Level 1 Rookie) @ 5/10/2010 07:05

Very style -ish, love the mini details in the picture, like the moose or the fishes :)

PixelSpy (Level 5 Captain) @ 5/10/2010 06:43

Very nice...the rock cliffs look great

st0ven (Level 2 Dealer) @ 5/9/2010 20:03

haha yeah i checked out your other ship pic in your gallery not too long ago - funny stuff! very fun concept. Id have to admit id be very curious to see how the cliff faces would have looked with a more flat, sheared look rather than the piled stone look. (ps moose bonus is awesome)

Mis-BUG (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 5/9/2010 11:44

bisschen zu scharf :P aber ganz gut gepixelt :D!

King of Games (Level 1 Thug) @ 5/9/2010 00:28

This reminds me of uncharted 1, nice concept.

KingOfTheTrolls (Level 9 Boss) @ 5/9/2010 00:07

I think his cooradinates are off...

:P amazing work!

Pragz (Level 1 Depressed) @ 5/9/2010 00:07

Eh, I don't know. With 21 colors I think you could have gotten a less grainy effect with the water, but that's just my opinion. Still pretty nice in the end. :)

P.S. - The cliff in the very far back (the part with the sign on it) could stand to be just a little less sharp and more out of focus. It kinda' stands out in an awkward perspective-defying way as-is.

(Hope you don't mind nitpicky critiques. You're very skilled and the small things are the ONLY things left to pick at. :P)

xQuack (Level 1 Gangster) @ 5/9/2010 00:01

Very nice! 5/5.
