Once again pixel art made in vocational school.

Most of it done on May 5th, when I was done with a serial letter faster than the most. Last few pixels placed today, May 12th.

It was the first piece I didn't "pixel right from the beginning", but draw a sketch of the different body parts with a bigger brush (in MS Paint) and than began to select colo(u)rs and pixel.

I should experiment more to make more progress, but it is frustrating to spend few of my pixel-art-time on things I might not finish. The less I risk, the less I improve. Unfortunately.

I'm not satisfied with it. Kinda. I think it's better than many of the things I've uploaded here, but I'm not that into Japanese-alike game sprites as I want to be. Any ideas?

The reason why I did this is, first of all, I'm happy to anticipate our old SNES soon back home to play Mario Kart again (amongst other games). Furthermore, I tried to alude to do the sprite-typical front-view/side-view poses, because I always try them and than throw the thing half done in the bin - I never break the deadlock, never get beyond the dead spot. I'm not that far in pixeling, yet.

A developement in my pixeling with this piece for me is that I didn't use shades with such a high contrast anymore which somehow made the dithering for a smooth colo(u)r flow senseless.

Questions to answer for you:
- Is the car over-dithered?
- How can I learn to find good/better colo(u)rs? They seem alright when I do it, but after I completed the picture... there's no harmony. They seem to be from two completely different palettes... weird.

yeah, the banana shading is probably hurting it. i'd work in some specular highlights n stuf

quick edit

So, I did it. Changed a few colors, removed a lot of dithering (left a few), reduced the number of colors from twenty to eighteen. I guess the point why it does not look really 3d is because the banana-shaped light-reflecting areas "don't have a logical form" so that they feel real. That is why I especially hate the helmet now. Suggestions?

Thanks, by the way! :)

if you show us the result of the non-dithered version, we can better determine why the 3d form isn't being expressed as acurately as it should.

You can dither, but try using a little dithering only in between the colors, and not all over. And a little more contrast between the colours would look nice I think.

Wow, "conservation in technique" brings it to the gist of the matter.

But when I tried to do it without dithering, it looked rather like a roof ridge than really round. Happens this due too much contrast between the shades, or is the difference in brightness regardless?

Make something completely round without messy dithering?....Umm, don't dither. You gotta remember that Dithering can sometimes be seen as texture, and on shiny objects, over-dithering such as this can make shiny metals seem furry, or rough; you definitely don't want that for metallic surfaces.

I suggest to try pixeling something without using ANY type of dithering, and see how you well you come out in the end. This isn't to make you stop dithering, but more or less, help you learn the importance of conservation not only in colors, but in technique as well.

Done. With IrfanView.

BTW: Any recommendation how to make an object seem completely round without using this messy much-dithering?

please resubmit with transparency

and yes, the car is over-dithered.
