The C&C made over at the wesnoth forums was apt, so I won't repeat them.
One thing that might help - on staves like that, you might want to avoid skipping lines with the highlight. Keep the highlight continuous, and maybe AA just one pixel around the highlit line. I vacillated on this technique for a while, and you can see some of my older work before I settled on something as "the best way to do it", where I skip lines.
