you're relying too much on outlines for something so small. remember why mario got his moustache: to distinguish features at a small size by using adjacent pixel clusters that contrast with one another.

The pixel's pretty cool for a beginner. Again, +1 for that.
Although, like Red-Error said, I'd love to see it animated. Right now, it's just waaay too static for something that's so happy and bright colored. -1
