It's not really about alternative techniques, but precision in pixel placement.
Dithering and AA patterns have to be checked at 100/200% for each and every pixel. Break patterns, avoid isolated pixels unless they bring some texture. Large flat checkerboard areas usually achieve the opposite effect than desired: they add roughness, noise, broken planes. One pixel too many makes a big difference!
Edit here, trying to do that. I tried to turn the dithering into bubbling froth ready to erupt, it could be brought much further.
I like your stuff. This was definitely one of the most original takes on this challenge, I hated not voting for it (by a narrow margin, there was just too much competition!). Hope to see more!
