I usually use 7 colors for each zone:

Brightness, Brightness-Medium, Medium, Medium-Shadow, Shadow, Shadow-Alias and Alias.

And this sprite have red, green, brown, pink, yelllow, blue, grey and more. This is the reason because my graphics have lot of colours.

This looks pretty good, but I REALLY think you could have used less colors.
