Here's a mockup sample I created recently for the reskin of a Nethack/Rogue style game. I don't usually do spec work, but the idea appealed to my sense of nostalgia (the weak underbelly of the artist dragon). I wanted to recreate my memories of old school RPGs, not replicate how they actually looked. It was rejected, but I'm proud enough of it to take it for a walk around the internet block.

6 tiles, 32x32 with sprite height variable up to 48. The global palette could use optimization, but I didn't want to slow down the workflow. I'm pretty sure each tile uses under 16 colors.

EDIT: Was messing around, and added a female barbarian. I have no idea why I revisited this, but it was fun.

Awesome! You should draw more of these.

Yeah, that was the intention. The characters could have subtle breathing idle animations (so you know what's alive at a glance), but would be static otherwise. Attacks and spells would be effect animations overlayed on top of the sprites. Basically, it would reduce the art creation to the fun stuff, no tedious transition tiles, etc.

Actually, in some ways, this is an absolutely brilliant idea.

That is, making a deliberately "static graphics" nethack style game, that is, with (nearly) no animations, and with no tile transitions, but large, high-res tile/monster icons.  I haven't ever seen one done that had really good "high res" pixel art.  I've seen a few with rather bleh 3d renderings, but never with pixels.

I actually like the absence of perspective or depth in this piece. Apart form the retro sentiment, it enables you to have a single tile for the walls

The sprites and door/items are pure delight.

I updated the description with a little more info. If I get a chance, I may upload the sketches I drew on paper for the sprites.

@Jim16: Avo is correct, this is for a Nethack style reskin.

Thanks for the kind words!

Not really sure what kind of game this is, but is looks really cool.
Care to explain how the game would work?

Looks like something like nethack but with very cool tiles. Nice sprites and everything!

Love it! Everything is so refined and the style ROCKS.

This piece definatly has a sweet style- especially the door and the hero(?) with the dagger-

I think the walls could use a little more polishing, though I'm not sure how many tiles you wanted to limit it to.
