I think that when it has transparency and therefore colour has no relation to picture's colors at all so detracts from it even more. (That doesn't mean that transparency has such effect every time).
It is from some myth?
Really? I thought it detracted from the piece because of what you said, the background and the foreground would have too similar colors.
The Saiga has that strange aura and coloration about it because it's an incarnation. It's also why it can survive underwater. I wouldn't like it if some magic animal thing came into my territory, so the Selkie's just defending itself.
I liked it more with background.
Nice otherwordly feel. Although would benefit of better definition (same colours on foreground objects and background make it hard to divide them).
What is the story behind Selkie and Saiga?
Ah! Yes, Selkies are from various European folklores. They are seals whom take off their skin, revealing a woman. The hide represents the woman's attachment to man - If it is stolen, they end up serving its captor because they cannot return to the sea. However, there are other interpretations that present the Selkie as a combination of a seal and a woman in the same way a centaur is represented as a combination of a horse and a man. This selkie here was inspired by Magic: The Gathering. To give you an idea...

Your comments convinced me to throw that background back in there. Another glance convinced me you were right. Thanks so much for the conversation. It's always nice to have outside input.
