Another set of faces. This time I asked iLKke to provide me with a palette which he did, but I sneakily tweaked 2 of his colours (not too much tho).

Also I want you people to know that there is extensive hidden content in this picture for which you will have to inspect it closely in your pixel pushing program of choice (MS-Paint wont work here I am afraid).

There are hints :)

Also: I am not in the hidden content, it is the chap who supplied the palette ;)

I am pretty much blithering illiterately at the moment. Jesus Christ.

Lovely palette, lovely characters, thats what I saw for a long time.
Somehow, after forgetting to comment this one, and even reading the description - I got here today to finally comment it - as I stole the palette for a graphic for a Amiga demo.

And you just blew my mind even more with the hidden pic O_o

user
Cyangmou (Level 8 Marshal) @ 1/15/2012 03:01

Those are all great characters and the palette is just lovely.

user
ThePixelKnight (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/9/2011 11:13

Amazing use of the palette!

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Admiral) @ 6/25/2011 05:31

Reveiled, but it does not just not work with MSpaint, my favorite palette editor MTpaint failed on me too. the 16x16 pallette is pretty much a requirement. I did not need the arrow, but you do need to know what to move where -_-.

Either way, cool stuff!

user
trough (Level 1 Intern) @ 4/11/2011 18:14

Haha, I accidentally discovered the hidden content while I was loading another file in Grafx2. I love that sort of thing. Especially when it's awesome pixel art.

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 11/6/2010 07:13

Thanks everyone again, and Stickman, it's the best compliment for me if people tell me I inspire them :)

user
Stickman (Level 6 SWAT) @ 11/5/2010 12:58

I sometimes (like I am now) come back to look at this in my favs and I'm still amazed out you handled these colours. It really and truly does look like you have 16 or more. That palette that iLkke provided you with , upon what you did with it is wonderful.

It inspires me even more to to try and make decent palettes instead of me just chosing some random colours and trying to make them work.

user
ProgZmax (Level 1 Depressed) @ 9/15/2010 23:21

The colors and clean shapes really set this apart, and the trick you did with the hidden image was clever as hell.

Brilliant work.

user
minipuck (Level 2 Corporal) @ 9/15/2010 08:20

can't desribe my own thoughts any different or better than this.

user
aniljp (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/15/2010 05:15

Oh yeah ... by the way ur artwork is amazing... really loved this piece ... :)

user
aniljp (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/15/2010 05:14

i have absolutely no idea how to get a clear pic .. I tried using everything ..... in the end, after using graphics gale, i saw the inverted palette and the arrows(Thankfully!!!)... And now I'm stuck again....  :( ...

user
Justincrdibl (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 8/12/2010 18:02

I finally figured it out! I am completely blown away! The amount of thought and time you must have put into this is simply mind-blowing

user
Skurwy87 (Level 6 Made) @ 8/11/2010 03:27

i've always liked those compilations and this one is prolly the best! :) congrats! also, i really love the hidden content :) you two fellows are incredible!

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 8/10/2010 06:06

bb: Made a few changes to deal with the problems you pointed out (and other things, thanks Arachne for valuable nipick action)

The highlight on the 12th fellow is supposed to be a glow around him. I made it more prominent to make it look less highlighty. Hope this helps.

You people might have to reload the image to see the changes.

user
Ixolite (Level 2 Petty Officer) @ 8/10/2010 04:26

This is friggin amazing! I don't really understand how you did that but it is beyond wicked coolnes.

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 8/10/2010 03:33

Delicious: Yes, there are 2 palettes and an arrow. And that is the hint. You have to do something with the palette.

user
jamon (Level 10 Operative) @ 8/10/2010 02:25

ok... it seams that lack of spread function in mspaint is killing people here =)

user
Squirrelsquid (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 8/10/2010 00:17

Amazing ofcourse!

user
Delicious (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 8/9/2010 16:44

 Love this piece.

I opened it up in GraphicsGale and I see a white arrow pointing to the color palette and a palette beneath the arrow, but that's all. I'm not even sure if that is what I'm suppose to be looking at?

user
ellie-is (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 8/9/2010 13:47

Huh. Okay, there's the white arrow, alright, but... Then what? I want to see iLKke too D:

user
snowk (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 8/9/2010 09:41

omigosh! could never get it to work quite right but i see him alright!! super clever. very nice faces btw

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 8/9/2010 08:37

Thanks dudes.

Jamon, I know, but I think iLKke looks cooler with the old beard. More iconic.

user
jamon (Level 10 Operative) @ 8/9/2010 02:08

Great “stencil” work… faces to…

But the beard of mysterious is a bit different on those days… trying to make new fashion breakthrough… =)))

user
Blueberry_pie (Level 7 General Manager) @ 8/9/2010 00:24

Very clever. It took me a while to find the hidden image at first because I copied and pasted the image instead of saving and opening the file. Great pixeling as always.

user
tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 8/8/2010 15:55

haha, awesome.

large stray pixel <3

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 8/8/2010 13:05

read the description to find out who it is.

user
epoxy (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/8/2010 12:59

Heehee! I tweaked it in Gimp until I found the "easter egg." Is it a self-portrait? It's an incredibly cool and well-executed idea!

I like the normal (actually bizzarre) faces too. Many of them look like they'd fit right in at the Mos Eisley cantina, especially the guys in the second row.

Arithmetician (Level 1 Rookie) @ 8/8/2010 12:10

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 8/8/2010 08:17

Photocopier: it's supposed to be a pixel.

-DE-: you can see the palette tho, right? If your program displays the palette as an 16x16 grid you should see two 8x8 blocks of colours and an arrow going from one block to the other. I really thought that would be hint enough.

user
-DE- (Level 11 General) @ 8/8/2010 03:53

Honestly, I have no idea what you're supposed to do (maybe due to my program having only rudimentary palette-editing functionality). Care to share the secret?

user
Photocopier (Level 11 Godfather) @ 8/8/2010 03:31

What's the thing on his nose?

user
OSM (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 8/8/2010 01:34

Holy. Shit. My mind is blown.

user
Badassbill (Level 10 Maniac) @ 8/8/2010 01:03

Just found the 17th portrait. Mind = Blown.

user
Niss (Level 4 Deputy) @ 8/8/2010 01:00

Nice looking, those faces!

The hidden thing is wicked :)

user
ui_ (Level 4 Deputy) @ 8/6/2010 18:29

whos that guy... omg!!! is that a fly!????... great palette!!! i love it!....

user
Mirre (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 8/6/2010 14:57

This is awesome! I very much liked to get to see the progress of this. Portraits are so much fun, and you certainly seem to have had fun with these. :D The many-eyed-bird-alien is my favourite I think. And I Love the details in the hidden portrait!

user
Gas 13 (Level 9 Boss) @ 8/6/2010 12:52

GENIUS.

user
Ergg (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 8/6/2010 12:00

I think you must be a bit crazy to imagine such faces ^^. I love !!

user
Satsume (Level 10 Capo) @ 8/6/2010 07:08

very nice faces

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 8/6/2010 04:55

You have to open it in some prog with good palette control (aka not MSPaint) and have a look at the palette. You should be able to figure it out, really.

user
Noet (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 8/6/2010 04:15

WHERES THE 17TH FACE!? I'M GOING NUTS, TELL ME NOW!

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Shodan) @ 8/6/2010 03:36

how the heck do you even begin to think to do that? impressive palette trickery.

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 8/6/2010 02:15

Thanks everyone :)

big brother: You got some points about the highlights and such. I might go in and tweak some a bit later today.

DawnBringer: Haha, I am not THAT crazy. I drew the 2 images separately and then used a workflow which is pretty simple to fiddle them together. All it involves is copying one of the 2 as many times as there are colours, and then making in this case 8 brushes of the other full picture - one colour in each, so you have stencils. Then you singlecolour those stencils with some colour not in the images and put them on the respective 8 versions of the other pic. Then all you have to do is some arranging of palettes so that nothing gets remapped before you fiddle the stenciled out parts back together. \o/

iLKke: :P

user
iLKke (Level 9 Nidan) @ 8/6/2010 01:27

Who IS that incredibly handsome chap in the hidden picture?

My vanity forces me to FAV this. Well played, mr.Ptoing!

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Maniac) @ 8/6/2010 01:03

Really nice faces...all 17 of them.  So, you didn't paint all that by hand did you (if u did your're nuts! ;) ), used some program/script or logical brush/shading-tool? Anyhoo...this is fav-cool. :)

user
Badassbill (Level 10 Maniac) @ 8/5/2010 23:22

I really love the palette and what you did with it. You guys should do this more often.

user
avo (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 8/5/2010 23:09

super!!

user
big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 8/5/2010 22:23

I love the pallette, it covers several hues while intersecting. The character designs look amazing, I can easily imagine them in a kick-ass game.

Few nitpicks: The gentleman in the third row, first column wants asymmetrical highlights on his collar. The character on the third row, fourth column would enjoy them also.

In every other portrait, the lighting seems to be coming from the upper left and it feels odd to break that. On first glance at the robot guy in the first row, second column, it looks like he has furry sideburns. The effect is probably not intentional.

Nice job! You're the man on the other side of the canvas.

user
Justincrdibl (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 8/5/2010 21:15

Amazing use of 8 colors! But I think I'm going crazy over trying to figure this secret out for the past 20 minutes. Could somebody please tell me through PM or something?
